As a Senior Principal Research Engineer at J&J Vision, you will serve as the Platform Technical Lead for one or more platforms of Ophthalmic Surgical Lasers and specialize in innovation, new product development, deep application & customer understanding, and technical subject matter expertise. You will be responsible for the product line roadmaps and helping lead NPI teams through all phases of the product development process, collaborating with extensive cross-functional partners to launch exciting innovation and deliver important eye health and vision restoration benefits to patients around the world.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the Platform Technical Lead for one or more platforms of Ophthalmic Surgical Lasers and/or associated Diagnostics and/or associated Accessories

  • Responsibilities include:

§ Innovation Roadmap, merging technology and science advancements for the platform with patient, customer, and business needs

§ New Product Introduction , driving the NPI process to ensure commercial products meet its performance goals alongside R&D, PMO, and cross-functional partners

§ Research Roadmap , managing the pre-clinical and clinical roadmap for the platform in partnership with R&D colleagues

§ Intellectual Property , including expert understanding of existing platform portfolio, relevant competitive portfolios, and helping build strong new IP to provide exciting innovation with sustained competitive advantage

§ Competitive Understanding , including detailed understanding of J&J and competitive products with pros/cons of competitive products to inform strategic roadmap and positioning

§ Customer & Application Expertise , deep understanding of the surgical applications for the platform and customer needs

§ Product Expertise , serves as the principal Subject Matter Expert for the platform, aiding R&D and cross-functional partners in all stage-gates from early-stage to development to transfer-to-manufacturing to market launch and stability

  • Works in highly collaborative fashion with wide-ranging cross-functional partners (e.g., Global Strategic Marketing, Supply Chain, Quality, Legal), business partners (e.g., regional business owners), external partners (strategic sources of critical technology components), surgeon advisory boards, strategic customers, and patients as applicable

  • Partners with R&D functional leads, such as heads of hardware engineering, software engineering, verification & validation, and research to advance the platform and deliver NPI

  • Determines the critical path, and identifies and resolves roadblock issues.

  • Defines key project constraints such as scope, schedule, budget, and resources.

  • Ensures project plans and deliverables follow appropriate design control procedures and any other applicable procedures and/or regulations

  • Knows and follow all laws and policies that apply to the job and maintains the highest levels of professionalism, ethics and compliance at all times. Participates in our compliance program-related activities as denoted by your supervisor or Chief Compliance Officer

  • Responsible for ensuring personal and Company compliance with all Federal, State, local and Company regulations, policies, and procedures

  • Performs other duties assigned as needed

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Sciences, or related technical field

  • Master’s degree or PhD degree preferred

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of experience in medical devices or other regulated or technical field

  • Ideally 5 years of experience in designing complex photonic equipment

  • Strong product design and/or product platform management experience preferred

  • Authorship of scientific publications and patents preferred

  • Proven track record of product innovation

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams, both local and geographically dispersed

  • Developed leadership capabilities and negotiation skills, as well as an attention to detail and the ability to effectively assimilate and communicate complex information from multiple sources

  • Ability to recognize and facilitate the resolution of project issues and roadblocks

  • Must possess strong leadership, management and teamwork qualities

  • Ability to interface with stakeholders at all levels within the company and with external customers and vendors

  • Recognized as experienced and professional project manager by peers

  • Must be able to work independently, provide multiple solutions to problems and make systems work together

For U.S. applicants, in accordance with applicable disclosure requirements, the anticipated base pay range for this position is $166,000 to $233,000. The pay range is the anticipated pay range for the position to which you have applied, and that such factors, including but not limited to, internal equity and experience will be considered for any offer.
