United States Steel Utility Technician (New Hire) in Minnesota

Utility Technician - Fire Protection work assignments include, but are not limited to, responding to fire/rescue/medical emergencies, safely operating fire apparatus and other equipment; inspecting and/or cleaning, servicing, testing, repairing, maintaining and installing firefighting equipment, fire control equipment, fire fighting facilities, fire fighting vehicles and emergency medical equipment; rendering first aid to the sick and injured; demonstrating fire fighting techniques; and conducting inspections for fire hazards. In addition, the Utility Technician - Fire Protection employee may frequently lift and/or move heavy tools and or equipment. Carry (over the shoulder) or drag victims out of buildings, and/or assist in lifting patients onto a stretcher, may occasionally be required to sit, climb at tall heights, balance, stoop, crawl, talk, hear, taste, and smell. Utility Technician - Fire Protection employee should to remain in good physical condition and meet any departmental standards concerning fitness. Utility Technician - Fire Protection employee will administer the U. S. Steel Safety program to ensure a safe work environment within the assigned facility and must be able to wear proper breathing apparatus.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs tasks that support various producing units using basic hand tools, pneumatic equipment, gauges, oxygen lances, power actuated tools, and torches.

  • Handles, transports, and processes product and materials

  • Work with and around materials that may be hot, heavy, or sharp, and hazardous chemicals.

  • Work in various areas of the plant is required. Dependent upon the area, environmental conditions can be hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Must have completed an approved Firefighter I & II program, must be currently certified as EMT – Basic or Paramedic in Minnesota)

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.

  • Successful candidates must have the ability to demonstrate fire fighting, rescue and emergency medical techniques, including the operation of firefighting equipment.

  • The position requires rotating 8-hour shift work, which will include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

  • The position requires overtime work as needed.

  • Adherence to safety procedures/guidelines always. Safety is our core value which requires you to wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, boots with metatarsal protection, and when necessary, respirator equipment.

  • The position requires punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction for the success of the operations.

  • Must pass a pre-employment digital assessment.

  • This is a safety sensitive position requiring drug and alcohol testing
