Our Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. We touch nearly every element of the services value stream from procurement to design and manufacturing to distribution. PSLD is responsible for Aftermarket Parts Distribution of Cat Parts, Integrated Logistics, segment Procurement and the design and manufacture of Wear Components (Undercarriage and GET) and Maintenance Components (Seals, Tubes & Hardware, Hose & Couplings, Fluids and Filters).

As the Senior Category Buyer, you will be responsible for the procurement of Logistics Services (Warehousing, Kitting, EPC’s and 3rd Party Labor). This individual will report directly to the Category Manager and will work with operational and logistics engineering teams to define business requirements and drive global strategy that supports overall organizational objectives. Key work activities include strategy development, managing a network of service providers, strategically sourcing to meet operational objectives, bidding process, contracts administration and driving supplier performance. Additionally, the Senior Category Buyer is expected to further develop sourcing strategies for the segment, utilizing subject matter expertise to effectively identify areas to differentiate the supply base and optimize the logistics network, helping to assure supply and contain cost for the enterprise.

What You Will Do:

  • Developing, managing, and executing the category strategy managing policies, agreements, source catalogs, and special procurement programs.

  • Procure logistics services that meet Caterpillar’s complex global operational and procurement standard requirements. Key focus around strategic sourcing to ensure capacity, service and market price objectives are met. Recognizing the potential for cost decreases, inventory reductions and quality improvement, as well as responsibility for soundness of business proposals and risk assessment.

  • Acting as the liaison between the organization and the supplier to communicate information explicitly, while considering business demands and suppliers’ conditions.

  • Documenting the suppliers’ performance on time sensitiveness and production; maintains a strong relationship with suppliers.

  • Leads contract negotiations with logistics services providers to achieve service and product requirements that meet operational objectives and in accordance with Caterpillar’s long-term strategy.

  • Works with various basic components of strategic sourcing, such as data analysis, market research, commodity indexation and purchasing budgets examination.

  • Works with different external suppliers to address critical issues and resolves major problems for implementing supplier relationship management practices.

  • Other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management from time-to-time.

  • Advises stakeholders on the relationship between financial, performance, and operational data used in business data analytics.

  • Anticipates operational challenges of data collection and its integration with decision-making.

  • Identifies correlations that reveal trends and determine conditions.

  • Evaluates the quality of data collected and the effectiveness of data analysis methods for evaluating business performance.

  • Interprets potential risks, threats, and opportunities involved with predictive modeling.

  • Directs the implementation of business data collection processes and educates junior employees on new data sources.

  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, or related field.

  • Negotiating: Knowledge of successful negotiation concepts and techniques; ability to negotiate successfully across the organization and with external vendors and clients in a constructive and collaborative manner.

  • Contracts Management and Administration: Knowledge of policies, standards and processes of how to manage and administer contracts; ability to use proper processes and practices for managing and administering a variety of contractual agreements.

  • Supervises management and administration for a wide variety of contracts.

  • Advises on the practices and considerations for upgrading existing contracts and solving complex contract management problems.

  • Trains others on how to use advanced technologies and tools for contracts management.

  • Develops standard processes to maximize contracts efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Evaluates operational issues and considerations in contract enforcement.

  • Anticipates contract issues and manages risk regarding legal issues.

  • Purchasing Tasks and Activities: Knowledge of policies, regulations and processes of purchasing; ability to use practices and procedures for procurement of materials, components, equipment and services.

  • Works with the implementation of complex purchasing programs and tasks.

  • Advises on the appropriate solutions to complex purchasing activity problems.

  • Monitors the effectiveness of procurement policies and strategies in high-cost purchases.

  • Improves procurement processes to maximize products or services efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Teaches others how to use advanced technologies and tools for purchasing activities.

  • Evaluates issues and considerations for purchasing various goods and services.

  • Supplier Relationship Management: Knowledge of supplier relationship management concept and strategies; ability to address critical issues to meet supplier needs and maintain engaged, partnering relationship with suppliers.

  • Advises others on the organization's supplier relationship management practices.

  • Builds consensus, resolves conflicts, and applies techniques to achieve influence and impact results with different suppliers in the organization's supplier network.

  • Coaches’ juniors on selecting, evaluating, and managing suppliers.

  • Conducts periodic reviews of work effort, progress, issues, and successes in supplier relationship establishment and management.

  • Evaluates the impact of SRM on the organization's different financials.

  • Refines organizational processes for establishing and maintaining supplier partnerships.

  • Strategic Sourcing: Knowledge of strategic sourcing methods, technologies and processes; ability to analyze, improve and re-evaluate organizational procurement process continuously.

  • Participates in monitoring the execution for all stages of the strategic sourcing process.

  • Trains others on strategic sourcing in multiple and diverse environments.

  • Designs and develops standard supplier agreements and procurement policies with standardized terms and conditions.

  • Works with complex strategic sourcing components including but not limited to negotiations, contracting, and continuous process improvement and implementation.

  • Consults on strategic sourcing methods in relation to business relationships, inter-dependencies and integration.

  • Develops and explains strategic sourcing best practices and rationale for the organization and industry.

Summary Pay Range:

$126,000.00 - $189,000.00
