Based out of our Lake Scranton surface water treatment plant, the Maintenance & Relief Operator will be responsible for performing day-to-day preventative, compliance related, as well as routine maintenance tasks. In addition to maintenance responsibilities, this individual will also serve as an Operator as needed. Our ideal candidate will have water treatment experience and/or have a strong mechanical aptitude with a maintenance background. _ Position Summary_ /To maintain, install and repair plant equipment and operate plant associated facilities./ _ Position Responsibilities_ * Troubleshoot, install, operate, maintain, inspect, repair, and perform preventive maintenance duties on the equipment at the Water Purification Plants and groundwater treatment systems; including but not limited to pumps, blowers, motors, chemical feed equipment, screens, mixers, filters, flow meters, gauges, valves, washwater processing equipment and related instrumentation and control equipment. * Calibrate and adjust chemical feed and process equipment including instrumentation and control systems. * Monitor the water purification plants / groundwater systems and make adjustments as necessary to control their operations. * Perform sampling, testing, and laboratory analysis to monitor process and determine compliance with Federal, State and PAW’s standards. * Perform necessary emergency operating procedures and take proper corrective action for continuous effective operation of the water purification plants / groundwater systems. * Maintain all necessary records, tools and work equipment. * Perform maintenance and custodial duties at production facilities. * Perform light construction projects as needed, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, masonry, etc. * Specify and initiate orders for parts and supplies. * Assume duties of plant operator in the absence of the operator as needed. * Delivery, loading, unloading and placing into storage water treatment plant chemicals, including chemical receiving and inventory. * Maintain grounds, buildings, roadways, screens, reservoirs and right-of-ways. * Position is subject to 24 hour call-out and overtime. _ Minimum Qualifications_ Job Knowledge * Two years experience in the water/wastewater maintenance field or other applicable mechanical/electrical experience. * Mechanical ability sufficient to understand the operation of pumps, valves, motors and other mechanical equipment related to plant operation and maintenance. * Ability to obtain Waterworks Operators Certificate (Plant Specific) within one to three years, depending on class. * Knowledge of basic scientific and water purification concepts. * Must possess a valid PA driver’s license. _ Skills & Abilities_ * Communicate in an effective manner both oral and written with the general public and company personnel. Read and understand instructions, safety rules, etc. * Required mathematical skills sufficient to be able to calculate dosages, surface areas, volumes, weights, measures and algebraic formulas. * Change easily and frequently from job tasks. * Use good personal judgment and specialized knowledge when handling situations and interactions. _ Education_ * High School graduate or state recognized education equivalency certificate. _ Physical Requirements_ * Capable of lifting and/or carrying 50 lbs. or more on a frequent basis. * Walking up and down stairs. * Working in confined areas. * Ability to wear a respirator. * Ability to respond to 24/7 callout and have the ability to respond to emergencies within an hour. * Work under adverse environmental conditions including contact with water, chemicals, fumes, odors and dust as a result of working with and handling potentially hazardous treatment and laboratory chemicals while using appropriate PPE. * Exposure to inclement weather mostly of short duration. * Ability to comply with the Company's attendance and code of conduct policies. * Ability to respond to 24/7 callout. _ Educational Qualifications_ * PA DEP Water Operator Class A license required within three (3) years of hire. * Successful completion of the following correspondence course: "VOLUME 1 - Water Treatment Plant Operation", offered by University of California at Sacramento. _ Preferred Qualifications_ Job Knowledge * Waterworks Operator's Certification in appropriate class is desirable. _ Skills & Abilities_ * The ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and control systems by using specialized testing equipment is preferred. _ Experience_ * Prior experience operating & maintaining equipment in an industrial setting is preferred. * Prior water treatment experience is desirable. _ Education_ * Technical college course work and/or degree in electrical, electronics or applicable engineering curriculum is desirable. _ Hours/Schedule_ * Full-time * Monday-Friday, daylight hours * Rotating on-call responsibility _ Competencies_ Champions safety Customer obsessed Cultivates innovation Nimble learning Drives Results Collaborates * Join American Water...We Keep Life Flowing™ * American Water is firmly committed to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and prohibits employment discrimination for employees and applicants based on his or her age, race, color, pregnancy, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, marital status, citizenship, or because they are an individual with a disability, protected veteran or other status protected by federal, state, and local laws.
