Caterpillar’s Electrification and Energy Solutions (E+ES) Division will focus on delivering advanced electrified power train, zero-emissions products/technologies, and the solutions and services associated with these technologies. Focus areas include batteries, fuel cells, motors, inverters, micro grid controllers, charging, energy storage systems, lifecycle solutions/services and integration of components for ePowertrain solutions across industries.

E+ES has an exciting and impactful career opportunity for an Electrical Technologist to work in the Rapid Innovation team supporting products being used in Next Generation Lithium Batteries, Fuel Cells, Chargers and Electric Machines ! This critical role will be responsible for concept development, prototype manufacturing, assembly, and testing of concept components and systems. The products in scope will vary and include but will not be limited to: high energy/power battery modules and packs, Fuel Cell cathode/anode loops, system test benches, and electric drive/hybrid machines.
This will be an individual contributor role and will have to routinely interact with engineering teams throughout the organization to accomplish goals. The Innovation Center based in Peoria and will require onsite collaboration with customers at the Mossville campus and may also require 10-20% travel for prototype supplier collaboration.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
System test bench specification and construction
Prototype supplier collaboration
Onsite prototype manufacturing via machine tools or 3D printing
Developing creative solutions to overcome challenges with current test facility capacity, including identifying and determining feasibility of alternate test locations
Assembly and end of line testing of batteries and fuel cell power systems
Collaborating with Product design and Manufacturing teams to embed DFMA
Collaborating with various business units within Caterpillar, suppliers, and customers
Collaborating with various engineering teams within Caterpillar to document and analyze test results
Performing electrical testing of components and systems
Degree Requirement
• Technical Associates Degree Engineering (Electrician, Applied Science, Engineering Technology, or related technical field) AND 4 years relevant engineering experience as an electrician or journeyman electrician; OR 6 years as an electrician or journeyman
Technical Excellence: Application experience in operations, testing, troubleshooting or design with power systems, electrical distribution, power electronics and/or control systems
Level Working Knowledge
• Caterpillar E+ES level 3+ electrical technician certified with minimum 3 years hands on experience troubleshooting and repairing electrified products including live Li-ion batteries.
• CAD/CAM design with manufacturing experience
• Field application experience in power systems, electrical distribution systems, power electronics, electric motors, control systems, hybrid solutions, energy storage, electrical system integration preferred
• Experience working with voltages ranging from 48 V to 1500V and DC systems preferred
Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Knowledge of design for manufacturability guidelines, methodologies, and use cases; ability to use this knowledge to optimize product designs and manufacturing operations.

• Analyzes the implementation challenges of DFM methodologies and shares them with their supervisors.
• Documents each stage of the design process for audit and review purposes.
• Follows standard guidelines and best practices while carrying out DFM procedures.
• Implements DFM methodologies to standardize product designs, simplify operations, and reduce costs for certain types of manufacturing processes.
• Utilizes basic DFM tools and technologies to implement DFM methodologies.
Engineering - MFG: Knowledge of processes, techniques and methods of engineering in a manufacturing environment; ability to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention.
Level Working Knowledge:
• Assists in problem resolution, drafting and writing specifications for engineering practices.
• Works with basic, routine components of the engineering discipline in manufacturing.
• Performs basic installation, maintenance and repairs for a specific engineering function.
• Follows relevant standards, policies and practices in engineering operations.
• Reports unusual engineering issues and considerations regarding manufacturing operations to senior staff.
Manufacturing Equipment: Knowledge of the electrical, mechanical and logistics equipment used in manufacturing; ability to safely operate, maintain, update and store them.
Level Basic Understanding:
• Describes the roles and responsibilities of equipment vendors and own staff.
• Explains where and how to obtain more equipment-specific information.
• Lists basic aspects of routine and preventive maintenance.
• Identifies uses and features of diverse types of manufacturing equipment.
Product Testing: Knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.
Level Basic Understanding:
• Describes key features and aspects of a specific testing discipline or methodology.
• Describes common errors that are uncovered by product testing.
• Cites examples of testing tools and practices currently in use.
• Names key documentation (paper, audio, video) required during the testing process.
Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.
Level Working Knowledge:
• Documents common hardware, software and communications problems and likely resolutions.
• Troubleshoots typical technical problems in a specific area.
• Works with vendor-specific diagnostic guides, tools and utilities to discover application problems.
• Adheres to standard troubleshooting procedures to ensure effectiveness of resolutions.
• Participates in setting evaluation standards and criterion for troubleshooting.

The location for this position is Peoria or Mossville, IL.
This position may require 10% + travel (domestic and international)
