Job Summary:

Senior Counsel - Labor and Employment, provides legal advice and guidance to company line and functional management on labor and employment matters affecting Bechtel business. The work is typically complex and challenging, involving issues that are both unique and require a high degree of original and creative thought for their solution.

The position reports to the Manager of Global Labor and Employment Law and can be based in Reston, VA or Houston, TX.

"This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership”

Major Responsibilities:

This position has responsibility for managing assigned labor and employment-related matters working closely with both senior management and the Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Labor Relations, and Ethics and Compliance organizations. The specific duties and responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Advising internal stakeholders on domestic and international labor and employment issues.

  • Identifying and assessing legal risks and mitigation measures.

  • Reviewing and updating internal policies and procedures.

  • Collaborating across departments to support and provide practical advice on Company initiatives and special projects.

  • Advising on collectively bargained agreements and grievances.

  • Preparing and presenting training across a variety of labor and employment legal issues.

  • Supporting Human Resources, Labor Relations, and Industrial Relations in the development of employment agreements and related documents, policies, and practices in compliance with local law, particularly when entering new jurisdictions.

  • Remaining current on emergent labor and employment law developments and advising on impact to the Company and implementation of any necessary changes.

The position also includes representing Bechtel in employment-related litigation and administrative proceedings, including the following:

  • Investigating and responding to administrative actions.

  • Assessing and determining litigation case strategy and defense.

  • Effectively communicating to management regarding merits, litigation developments and cost.

  • Retaining and managing outside counsel and internal resources in accordance with Bechtel litigation objectives and case budgets.

  • Managing Bechtel compliance with discovery requirements, including e-discovery obligations and supervision of Legal Assistant case support.

  • Preparing Bechtel witnesses.

  • Representing Bechtel at settlement conferences, mediations and arbitrations.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree; J.D. from accredited law school.

  • Licensed in good standing to practice law in one or more jurisdictions.

  • At least 8 or more years' experience as a practicing labor and employment attorney.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Collegial approach to the practice of law.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong leadership, organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure; strong initiative and work ethic.

  • Exceptional analytical and investigative skills, with strong attention to detail.

  • Strong presentation, advocacy and negotiation skills.

  • Experience interfacing with executive management, and high level of client service skills.

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and abroad.

  • Experience with a broad variety of case types, including class actions, wage and hour investigations, litigation and administrative claims inside and outside of the U.S.

  • Experience in responding to governmental audits and investigations.

  • Other areas of legal experience and background are of interest, as opportunities may exist to provide legal support beyond labor and employment law.

Preferred:

  • Bi-lingual (Spanish preferred).

  • In-house experience.

  • International employment law experience.

  • Traditional labor law experience.

  • Experience handling data privacy law matters.

  • Experience providing labor and employment advice in the Construction Industry.

  • Experience with employee benefit and compensation plans.
