The Clinical Lab Assistant handles any/all Laboratory-related duties specific to the pre-analytical phase of specimen processing/testing, which includes, but not limited to, managing workflow at the specimen accessioning table (Processing), dispatching of Phlebotomists throughout the facility as needed, and blood collections. Other duties include assisting the Laboratory’s MedicalTechnologists/Technicians with preparing specimens for analysis/testing, up to actual test performance, as permitted by the TN Medical Laboratory Board.
What you will do in this role: 1. Assists in overseeing all activities in the collections department throughout the Campus, which includes all aspects of specimen accessioning (Processing). 2. After completion of assigned training and proven competency, assist with pre-analytical aspects of specimen processing/testing within the testing departments up to actual test performance. 3. Assists Supervisors in ensuring staffing is adequate and all collections have been performed in a timely manner according to the Laboratory’s Blood Collection procedure. 4. Knowledge of physiology and function of the venous system of the human body, and collection techniques used to draw blood from patients. 5. Knowledge of human growth and development appropriate to the ages of patients served. 6. Practice proper patient identification. 7. Label blood vials according to established procedures. 8. Transport all specimen samples to the appropriate laboratory department. 9. Utilizes computer system for data entry and monitoring of workflow. 10. Centrifuge blood specimens per laboratory department specifications. 11. Maintain phlebotomy supplies in cart, tray and storeroom in an organized manner. 12. Assist Supervisory staff in inventory management. 13. Follow safety and infection control processes and procedures. 14. Participates in new employee and student training as assigned. 15. Supports and carries out hospital initiatives and goals and initiatives of the Laboratory. 16. Utilizes the AIDET Communication model routinely and supports its utilization among phlebotomy staff. 17. Participates in meetings, training, in services and other educational activities. 18. Helps effectively implement new procedures and processes in the phlebotomy department. 19. Presents a positive, service-oriented focus to all customers. 20. Exhibits and adheres to ICARE Standards of behavior in all areas of job duties and responsibilities. 21. Takes ownership of mistakes and notifies Laboratory management when they occur. 22. Assists Lab staff to investigate specimen collection/processing quality issues. 23. Abides by all policies and procedures affecting Laboratory staff ie attendance, parking, etc. 24. Demonstrates professional and independent judgment. 25. Performs tasks as assigned by Management.
What qualifications you will need:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a Certified Phlebotomy Course (strongly preferred)
- Phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting preferred
- Processing (Specimen Accessioning) experience preferred
- Demonstrated experience with each of the required areas of expertise in section III below (required).
- Interpersonal and leadership skills to successfully interact with all co-workers, staff, patients, patient families and vendors.
- Very good computer and communication skills.
