Entergy Gas Controller (Natural Gas Utility Systems) in New Orleans, Louisiana

Entergy has entered into an agreement to sell its Louisiana gas distribution business to Bernhard Capital Partners.

The sale is expected to close in approximately the third quarter of 2025. Entergy has no planned reduction in workforce as a result of this sale, and intends to operate the business as usual prior to the sale.

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:

The position is responsible for operating and monitoring the Entergy natural gas transmission and distribution utility systems in a safe and reliable manner utilizing the Gas SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) real-time

monitoring and alarming computer system. This involves making pipeline system flow and pressure adjustments and coordinating such adjustments with upstream gas pipelines interconnected to our pipeline systems to meet daily gas

supply nominations and operating the system within allowable operating pressure limits. This position is also responsible for dispatching normal work to field personnel after hours and for handling all gas emergencies 24/7 by

dispatching field personnel providing field resources with asset information from mapping and database records systems, and providing internal/external notifications in a timely manner.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for utilizing and monitoring the gas SCADA system for alarms and making real-time remote changes to the gas transmission and distribution pipeline system to maintain appropriate flow rates and pressures, and alerting field and management personnel as needed of Abnormal Operating Conditions (AOC’s). Will request and direct field resources to respond to AOCs that occur on the pipeline and with gas metering and pressure regulating equipment in the field (gas odorizers and over pressure protection devices) at City Gate and Regulator Station locations.

  • Responsible for ensuring that daily Gas Supplier economic nominations are received from Entergy’s Fossil Fuels Supply group for the Gas Dept’s two (2) Distribution and Transmission pipeline systems and proper system adjustments (Supplier or Entergy) are made throughout the gas day to meet those nominations. Responsible for daily reconciliation of gas supplier and Entergy gas dispatch volumes as an audit control for daily gas purchases.

  • Responsible for looking up gas facilities asset record information using the Gas Geographical Mapping System (GIS) after hours to aid field personnel in performing their work safely by providing gas facilities locations and measurements and identifying valve(s) to operate and pipeline segment supply back feeds to sectionalize and isolate segments of the system.

  • Utilizes and interprets Entergy’s Gas Operation’s Emergency Plan procedures to safely and effectively guide employees during emergency situations & outages to mitigate the impact to and provide for the safety of the general public & Entergy customers. Accountable for ensuring the adherence to the procedure and is called on to make numerous decisions that are not specifically outlined or contained in these guidelines. Responsible for responding to and aiding in the directing providing instructions of Gas First Responder Emergency (Gas Service Mechanic) personnel in the field to handle gas emergency situations. Often decide when and the number of resources that will be called out.

  • Responsible for handling all non-emergency work after hours, including but not limited to customer account investigations, meter short cycle work, coordinating acquiring additional field resources for gas emergencies, and triggering after hours gas escalation processes. Responsible for monitoring of distribution gas lines that feed critical customers (S&WBD and NOPS power plant), hospitals and makes decisions to ensure quick restoration to these customers.

  • Communicating with appropriate State and local authorities and/or Entergy personnel to facilitate the mitigation of emergency conditions such as personal injury, public safety issues, environmental concern or asset damage. Handle all follow-up written notifications to State and local authorities above as directed by Entergy Gas Operation’s Hazardous Release Reporting procedures.

  • Develops and prepares numerous gas data reports and forms for internal use throughout Gas Operations, as well as other external departments within and outside Entergy for regulatory and accounting reporting purposes.

  • Assists in determining proper valves to operate in order to sectionalize segments of pipe and/or sections of piping for employees and contractors who work on normally pressurized equipment and part of the approval process.

  • Exercises considerable discretion and independent judgement in both assigning work to and responsibly directing the work of field employees on a daily basis. Often re-prioritizes work on a field truck to move to handle gas outage or emergency situations.

  • Responsible for interfacing with internal and external agencies such as but not limited to: LA State Police, Customer Call Center, DEQ, Fire Depts., One Point Desk, Compliance, Measurement, Maintenance, Service.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum experience required of the position:

  • 2-4 years

  • Desired experience:

  • 5 years Gas Operations Experience (Service/Measurement preferred) or Control Room experience

  • 6-8 years of Work Dispatching experience or equivalent

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Must have high level computer skills in office products within Entergy Toolkit applications and have the ability to learn & use new systems quickly.

  • Knowledge of CCS

  • Excellent verbal communication skills.

  • Must be able to communicate to external agencies and bodies (e.g., police, fire department, emergency response) and internal employees up to the Vice-President.

  • Must be able to work alone, be self-motivated and self-directed.

  • Must be able to integrate into the GDC environment and possess strong team building skills.

  • Must be able to multi-task and constantly be able to rearrange priorities.

  • Must be able to handle several situations at one time.

  • Strong decision-making skills and experience - must have the ability to make independent judgment for accurate interpretation of readings and for distinguishing between minor and more serious problems to make proper decisions.

  • Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of Gas Distribution System operation

  • Knowledge of Gas Customer Service procedures

  • Knowledge of Click scheduling

  • Knowledge of Maximo application

  • Knowledge of SCADA system (gas preferred)

  • Knowledge of AMFM/GIS applications

  • Knowledge of Customer Care Service (CCS) application.

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and make good decisions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays with no special consideration - 12 hr. shifts/24 hr.operation.

  • As a safety sensitive position, compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) drug and alcohol regulations, including but not limited to pre-employment drug testing and background screening.
