How will you make an impact in this role?

The Capital Planning team is part of the Global Treasury organization and supports capital management activities across the firm. The team plays an in integral role in creating the annual capital plan, performing capital adequacy assessment, analyzing and advising on capital distribution strategies, enterprise stress testing, and balance sheet forecasting.

The Director – Capital Planning will lead the team responsible for the development and implementation of the firm’s capital planning processes. The role will be heavily involved in assessing capital adequacy, monitoring, reporting, and forecasting of regulatory capital ratios and the balance sheet, proposing capital distribution actions, company-wide stress testing exercises, ad-hoc analysis, and preparing the firm to comply with Basel III Endgame capital rules and bank category transition. The director will collaborate with colleagues across the enterprise, interact with senior leaders, and lead a high-performing team.

Responsibilities Include

  • Lead the development and implementation of the firm’s capital strategy, including the annual capital planning process

  • Perform quarterly capital adequacy assessments and make capital distribution recommendations related to dividends and share repurchases to senior leaders

  • Perform regular forecasting of AXP’s balance sheet, risk weighted assets, capital positions, and regulatory capital ratios

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the enterprise (e.g., CP&A, Controllership, Treasury, Tax) in planning and forecasting activities including Plan, LRP, and monthly R&O forecast cycles

  • Engage in the stress testing of capital resources as part of the enterprise-wide Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) exercise

  • Lead the capital components of the Internal Capital Adequacy and Assessment Process (ICAAP), and update the capital adequacy framework regularly

  • Support subsidiary capital analytics and the governance of subsidiary capital transactions including capital infusions and dividends

  • Serve as the Secretary of the Capital Management Committee (CMC). Coordinate CMC agenda topics, conduct meetings, and prepare material to be presented at the CMC, Asset Liability Committee (ALCO) and Board of Directors meetings

  • Provide consultative support to M&A deals, new product offerings, subsidiary stress testing, ad-hoc projects, and process improvement activities

  • Stay abreast of the evolving regulatory landscape, perform scenario analysis as needed, and support regulatory advocacy efforts

  • Support the firm as it prepares to comply with Basel III Endgame capital rules and Bank Category Transition requirements

  • Lead a high-performing team to deliver on the promise

Minimum Qualifications

  • Results oriented, with a track record of driving results across multiple initiatives

  • Keen focus on operational excellence

  • Excellent analytical abilities and attention to detail

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a can-do attitude

  • Self-motivated and pro-active in identifying improvements and sharing ideas

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines, manage multiple demands, and turn results around quickly

  • Highly proficient in Excel and PowerPoint

  • Exceptional communication skills – verbal, written and presentations. Ability to break down complex topics into understandable and actionable messages.

  • Strong people leader who brings others with them

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7 years of Finance/Treasury experience

  • Master’s degree in Finance or Accounting

  • Planning and forecasting experience leveraging TM1

  • Understanding of balance sheet management

Qualifications

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
