How will you make an impact in this role?

The Director, U.S. State & Local Tax Advisory, will:

  • Provide tax technical advice with respect to U.S. state & local income/franchise, sales/use, gross receipts, and business license tax matters, including M&A transactions, intercompany and supplier agreements, and new product and other new business proposals

  • Lead strategic and creative planning efforts

  • Track and proactively assess how legislative, administrative, and other legal developments in state & local tax impact American Express, including liaising with Government Affairs and external industry organizations

  • Contribute to the monthly and quarterly processes of documenting state & local tax developments

  • Prepare and review documentation related to state & local tax positions

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the tax accounting and tax compliance teams to provide tax technical advice on state & local tax issues

  • Provide guidance on ASC 740 and ASC 450 implications of tax positions, including a quarterly review to ensure all positions are properly documented

  • Lead the development of documentation to support all ASC 740 and ASC 450 reserves

  • Lead projects in other areas of tax, including the federal airline excise tax

  • Provide tax technical guidance and legal assistance in state & local tax audits and controversies, including drafting protests and similar documentation

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8 years state & local tax experience in income/franchise, sales/use, and gross receipts taxes

  • Experience with a law firm, national public accounting firm, and/or a large multi-national corporation

  • JD degree strongly preferred, LL.M. degree a plus

  • Proactive self-starter with ability to drive results

  • Ability to perform tax research and analysis

  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills with ability to translate ideas into value added solutions

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to build relationships and work effectively with internal clients and external advisors

  • Well-developed organizational, time management, planning, and prioritization skills

  • Willingness to develop skills and experience in other areas of taxation

Qualifications

Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually bonus y (if applicable) benefits
