The Global Risk & Compliance Organization (“GRC”) is an independent risk management function, led by the Chief Risk Officer, with the objective of ensuring that American Express operates in a safe, sound, and fully compliant manner within all applicable regulatory expectations. GRC creates and maintains the overall risk management framework, performs independent risk management assessments, and monitors applicable risks.

By partnering closely with business units across the enterprise, we help deliver maximum value to our shareholders and our customers through effective risk management and oversight activities.

GRC’s Enterprise Risk Management & Risk Oversight team (ERM&RO) is hiring a Director who will lead the establishment of a new team to provide governance and oversight for projects across American Express. ERM&RO is responsible for the independent risk management and oversight of several material risks that the Company faces. The team owns the Company’s Risk Appetite Framework and is responsible for establishing enterprise-wide programs and frameworks for managing key risks. ERM&RO is led by the Executive Vice President, Head of Enterprise Risk Management & Risk Oversight.

The new team will partner with the US Enterprise Risk Management team to develop a governance framework to manage the risks associated with projects across the company. Once established, the new team will own and maintain that framework. This will include developing and maintaining a comprehensive inventory of projects across the company and refreshing it on an ongoing basis; creating and implementing graduated risk management requirements for projects based on the risk of the project; and designing and executing regular reporting on American Express projects to senior leaders and/or appropriate risk committees.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and enforce an enterprise project governance framework, with graduated governance requirements based on project classifications

  • Develop and implement a methodology and process to classify projects to determine required governance

  • Identify and maintain an inventory of projects across the company

  • Develop and issue regular project governance reporting to senior leaders and/or appropriate risk committees

  • Review and provide guidance to first line stakeholders as they develop/maintain procedures to implement the governance framework

Qualifications:

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in risk, compliance, legal, or regulatory roles

  • Experience with project management and governance required; Project Management Professional (PMP) certification a plus

  • Experience with regulatory findings remediation and executive/committee reporting preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree a plus

Skills

  • Strong communication skills a must, particularly written communication

  • Discretion when exposed to restricted/secret company information

  • Self-starter who works well independently in white space

  • Able to effectively manage multiple and often conflicting priorities under tight timeframes and adapt to frequent change

  • Able to lead without authority derived from band level

  • Highly organized with attention to detail, sense of follow-through, and accountability

Qualifications

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
