Our Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) Risk Management Team stands behind each of these purchases, thus protecting this network of millions of consumers, merchants and businesses.
The Director will join a team responsible for overseeing a portfolio with exposure of over $5 Billion. You will be the Leader of a team of Regional Risk Officers on the front line, protecting the merchant business P&L from loss, while carefully balancing the merchant relationship with Amex.
Alongside credit risk management, you will be responsible for minimizing operational risk across your portfolio. The objective will be to establish the Operational Risk and Controls strategy for GMNS and set up a foundational governance structure that ensures operational risks are identified, assessed, and managed in compliance with enterprise Operational Risk Management programs and reporting. The Director will be focused on ensuring control management is embedded in the day-to-day operations of our organization.
The Director must have good judgment, excellent oral and written communication skills, be analytical, motivated and be a strategic thinker, who can dive into numeric financial details and understand the business models of companies operating in different industries e.g. travel, retail and lodging while still being able to conduct negotiations with C-Suite executives. Our team members are multitalented who are self-directed and make decisions that have high stake profitability and risk tradeoff. Additionally, our team plays a central role in both the GMNS and Risk organizations by collaborating with client managers, credit rating team members and attending various risk committees so being a team player with outstanding interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence is crucial.
Responsibilities
This exciting and visible role within Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) Risk Management, will be responsible for verifying exposures through financial and business model reviews, calls with merchants and client managers, and review of other external information.
Personally manage a large portfolio of large merchant clients with a sense of urgency while simultaneously overseeing other RROs with their merchant book of business.
Lead and manage a team of talented RROs, answering their questions and helping them to incorporate best practices in Portfolio management.
Collaborating with internal partners to source financial information, create review cases, work with Client Managers, support escalations from Submission Monitoring Team, and make risk mitigation decisions.
Facilitate investigation and conduct root cause analysis on identified process gaps or issue types
Analyze trends in issues and events to identify potential systemic risks or control weaknesses within BU processes
Support End-to-End (E2E) issue resolutions embedding accountability and ensuring lessons learned are integrated into future practices
Opine on specific control enhancements related to issues
Conduct in-depth process design and risk analyses on business functions to identify data integrity issues and/or operational risks
Liaise with Business Unit (BU) process owners and Technology application owners to design and implement controls, and provide broader input on areas of risk
Perform thematic analyses from previous control-related issues and partner with operational risk partners to develop risk mitigation strategies
Make regular presentations to senior leaders in both formal and informal settings.
The role also includes working on special projects when needed, the ability to prepare presentations for upper management, pull data to support team BAU projects such as Large Loss Reporting, C1 or Worse Reviews, and other industry specific risk initiatives.
The incumbent will have responsibility for prioritizing a portion of a portfolio of risky merchants with billions of dollars in credit exposure, proactively managing challenging negotiations with top CEOs and CFOs, and navigating internal stakeholders to gain alignment on a timeline to take action with our merchants.
Partner with Acquisition, Relationship Management, Compliance, Collections, Operations and External Agencies to implement strategies
In addition, by being close to the fundamental metrics that drive profitability and RoEC (Return on Economic Capital), the incumbent will have opportunities to drive projects to help AXP win in the marketplace.
This role includes in-depth analytics, developing and monitoring key credit metrics, designing risk mitigation strategies and customer facing negotiations that will strengthen American Express’s competitive advantage and brand promise in the market.
Ability to turn big, raw data files into meaningful reporting and presentations.

The successful candidate must be able to work under their own initiative and be able to problem solve in times of fast changing priorities. In addition, he/she must be able to navigate through often stressful, urgent, complex and ambiguous situations independently while seeking the win-win solution. The incumbent must have the ability to apply analytical/quantitative and negotiating techniques which translates results to business solutions. Other critical strengths include very strong relationship management and communication skills. The applicant must be a self-starter with demonstrated ability to work proactively and independently to drive results within a strong team environment. The ability to influence others and manage multiple concurrent projects in a dynamic environment will be essential. Experience working in highly cross functional environments is desirable, as is the flexibility and adaptability to work with tight deadlines and changing priorities. In addition, the following experience and qualifications are desired:
Previous Merchant Acquiring Risk, Client Management or Commercial Credit Underwriting experience throughout multiple industries is desirable.
Strong financial and analytical acumen, financial credit and/or accounting knowledge, comfort with financial statements is a must.
Ability to manage a sizeable portfolio of clients in an organized manner with a sense of urgency.
People management experience; leadership in diverse teams.
Contract negotiation skills.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Previous experience within a client facing role with C-Level (CEO, CFO and Treasurers) counterparts)
Ability to confidently present complex credit metrics to CFO and CEOs of large companies preferred with credibility and compassion.
Understanding of US Bankruptcy Law and Preference Period Risk is desirable.
Demonstrated relationship building skills and experience managing multiple stakeholders
Creative thinker who thrives on finding unique solutions, particularly in workout scenarios, which enable all parties to “win”
Experience in process governance, with an understanding of processes that align with policies, regulatory frameworks, and/or operational standards
Experience in at least one of the following:
Translating operational risk strategy and appetite into execution guidelines
Tracking and identifying issues with Key Risk Indicator (KRI) limits and risk appetite to ensure operational risks are managed within agreed thresholds
Oversee the implementation of the operational risk governance frameworks
Scoping prioritizing, and support remediation of operational issues
Investigating and conducting root cause analysis to address repeated operational risk issue Communicating and ensuring understanding and adherence to operational risk procedures and standards types
Performing quality assurance on documentation of risk processes
Overseeing BU remediation process for operational risk issues and events
Reviewing documentation and maintaining records to ensure transparency and accountability
Expertise in process governance, with a track record of establishing and overseeing robust decision-making processes that align with policies, regulatory frameworks, and/or operational standards
Experience in operational risk management (e.g., within Risk and/or Internal Audit function)
Understanding of critical operational risk management lifecycle activities
Knowledge of SQL, Terradata or SAS or commitment to learn these skills
Expertise in all MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PPT).
MBA, Certification or equivalent work experience preferred

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
