Do you want to accelerate American Express’ digital capabilities by developing and delivering our tech strategy? We are looking for a Director to oversee the Strategic Planning & Program Management function for Amex Technology’s multi-year Tech Strategy and will work on select internal strategic consulting engagements for Amex’s Technology organization. This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate to bring our technology strategy to life.

The Director will be responsible for overseeing a multi-year strategy program, connecting a wide array of initiatives that will enable our aspiration. The team will also drive internal consulting for key strategic work. A successful candidate will have a strong background in enterprise-wide strategic planning and program management including driving strategic transformation and/or complex change programs along with previous management consulting experience.

What you’ll do:

This role will be a combination of program management, strategy development, and internal consulting. Specifically, this role will:

Program Management

  • Own and lead the governance and implementation of the multi-year Technology Strategy, leading a small team to deliver on the program aspirations and bring key stakeholders along on the journey

  • Drive governance committees and processes to track progress, metrics and any planned value capture

  • Develop an integrated, sequenced, multi-year roadmap of discrete initiatives identified to deliver on the strategy

  • Build strong relationships with key initiative owners and stakeholders (within Technology and across the company) to ensure commitment for sustained focus and transparency of progress and issues

  • Partner with Technology Communications to enable multi-directional communication and feedback to drive sustained change and adoption of new ways of working

  • Establish reporting cadence in support of governance forums and other executive updates with transparency around value, progress, metrics, issues and risks

  • Define key metrics to measure progress and regularly communicate progress on the strategy to Technology Leadership, program stakeholders, and key partners

  • Partner with Technology Business Management Executive Reporting team to track initiatives, program level OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) and to track impact/outcomes of the transformation in addition to general progress tracking

Strategy Development & Strategic Planning

  • Evolve the multi-year Tech Strategy and oversee annual refresh process

  • Partner with senior leadership to develop strategic capabilities, metrics, and initiatives in support of refreshed strategic vision

  • Set the vision for future Technology aspirations and the strategic plan to achieve it

  • Produce presentation materials for executive audience and senior leadership

Internal Consulting

  • Be a strategic consultant for enterprise stakeholders to support digital / technology strategy development of strategic initiatives

  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to align on ideal state solution and develop the strategy to achieve it

  • Conduct buy vs build assessments, conduct competitive market analysis to identify strategic capabilities, design business cases to support strategic needs

Who you are:

  • A leader with 10 years of experience in Strategy Consulting and Program Management, 3 years leading, developing, and mentoring high performing teams

  • An excellent communicator with the ability to engage, influence, and inspire others to work towards shared outcomes.

  • Intellectually Curious and Data-driven – High intellectual curiosity, creativity, complex problem solving and strategic and innovative thought leadership; ability to proactively ask questions and design a data model to answer them; prior experience in data analytics and executive summarization to avert risk and drive actions

  • Executive Presentation – Highly proficient in developing excellent quality presentations and deliverables for an executive audience.

  • Continual Improvement and Innovation – Passion for continual improvement, process design, and automation; seeks new ways to improve effectiveness, quality, and compliance

  • Leadership – Experience in leading, and mentoring diverse and global teams

  • Stakeholder Management – Confident and clear communication and relationship building skills, with the ability to influence Executive leaders / SMEs (Subject Matter Expert), and drive progress and decision making

  • Business and Technical Knowledge – Understanding of industry trends in Financial Services (Payments, FinTech) and American Express’ business model.

  • Results Oriented – Track record of driving results across multiple channels and initiatives in a fast paced and dynamic environment.

  • Familiar with Agile framework and methodologies; empathetic to Agile team needs.

  • Bachelor’s degree, MBA preferred

  • Located in NY (New York) and willingness to travel up to 10%.

Qualifications

Salary Range: $145,000.00 to $230,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
