The Enterprise Strategic Partnerships (SP) team is charged with leading American Express’ largest, most strategic partnerships and acts as the center of excellence for these partners across the Enterprise. We generate differentiated value for both American Express and our partners by taking an Enterprise approach that leverages our entire suite of assets while reducing complexity for the partners, foster C-Suite relationships to ensure an aligned partnership vision and to advance key priorities, lead business development initiatives that unlock new opportunities to enhance our value propositions and build trust and credibility that facilitates collaboration and co-innovation.

The Role

The Vice President, Strategic Partnerships (B45) reports into the SVP/GM for the digital and fintech vertical partners and will lead a team of three. The portfolio consists of our largest fintech, aggregators and platform relationships that include Adyen, Block, Fiserv, Shopify and Stripe. This leader will play an integral role in defining and developing unique new partnership opportunities to support our Enterprise objectives and will work cross-functionally to align the interests across the Company. This role requires an experienced leader with strong relationship management experience.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Strategy & thought-leadership: Lead the development of American Express’ overall enterprise strategies with Adyen, Block, Fiserv, Shopify and Stripe, guide Enterprise stakeholders as the thought leader on the constantly evolving fintech and commerce landscape, bring deep insights on market trends & competitive threats, develop & implement effective strategies to grow the business through new products & partnerships. Bring structure to framing complex issues.

  • New business development: Cultivate relationships & establish new partnerships across the digital ecosystem for payments & e-commerce initiatives; develop and deliver partnership pitches, create winning deal constructs, lead contract negotiations, create go-to-market plans and implement long-term strategies for success.

  • Partnership growth & management: Build and develop key relationships with the partners to enhance the partnership and act as a primary point of contact for the enterprise. Collaborate with partner and Amex business teams to co-develop roadmap and to ensure the maximum value of the enterprise relationship can be realized.

  • Leadership: Build, mentor and lead an impactful team of 3 business development professionals; provide coaching to support individuals’ career development and maintain strong culture to inspire and retain top talent.

  • Cross-functional excellence: Work closely with cross-functional internal and external teams across product, marketing, risk, legal and other key business to ensure we have winning strategies that drive the best outcomes for both Amex and the partner.

  • Communication: Represent the company and be the senior point of contact for the partner, be a thought leader with ability to influence outcomes up and across Enterprise while at the same time being able to engage the partner and their business ecosystem.

Qualifications:

  • 10 years of experience working in business development, partnership management or in strategic business areas within the fintech, commerce and payment acquiring ecosystem.

  • Ability to lead sophisticated complex partnerships deals and negotiations, including working closely with a legal team and external partners.

  • Ability to think strategically and creatively to develop high impact partnerships and strategies for driving innovation and growth.

  • Exceptional skill in driving results and handling multiple priorities.

  • Quantitative analytical skills to assess data for insights as well as the financial and business impact of partnerships.

  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication and influencing skills with the ability to work with partners across different functions, colleagues at all levels, and with partners.

  • Passion and curiosity for payments and commerce innovations & customer experiences and developing them into practical insights that can inform our partner strategies.

  • Strong understanding of consumer & merchant behavior and payment trends; desire to work on dynamic, innovative, and evolving initiatives.

  • A self-starter with an ability to excel in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment and to switch gears as required. High degree of intellectual curiosity, comfort with ambiguity, ability to bring structure to “blue sky” opportunities.

  • Seasoned people leader with a track record of leading and coaching high-performing teams

Qualifications

Salary Range: $185,000.00 to $260,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
