American Express Director of Marketing Strategy in New York


Global Commercial Services (GCS) is the division of American Express dedicated to creating products, services and solutions uniquely built for businesses of all sizes, from small business to large global businesses. The Marketing Strategy team sits within the Global Marketing organization. We are focused on creating a strategic foundation for the GCS brand and leading the central go-to-market strategy for organizational big bets across segments, including product launches and refreshes. The members of the team define the vision and collaborate with key partners to seamlessly bring each strategy to life.

The Director in this role will lead and inspire a team of high performing project-based Managers/Senior Managers who each lead a high priority strategy – ensuring consistency and best practices are infused across marketing channels and tactics. The Director also owns oversight of our team’s formula to bring a new product or solution to life, evolving it as new lessons are learned. This role is a unique blend of marketing strategy and implementation, with the ability to focus on the customer, influence marketing strategies for high priority projects across GCS and drive exciting growth for our business.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 6 high performing marketers

  • Set team’s staffing, including keeping a pulse on organizational big bets, gaining alignment on project support and allocating team members appropriately

  • Partner closely with Product Management (or applicable project owner) to be the source of marketing input into the vision, value proposition and product positioning

  • Lead the development of the go-to-market vision and strategy across projects. This includes creating and owning the:

  • Design target and persona(s) backed by customer insights

  • Overall go-to-market plan, including strategic focus areas, objectives and timeline. Strategic focus areas define where we can most effectively bring the product or solution to life for the customer across channels.

  • Creative campaign or platform, including working closely with agency partners.

  • Materials to enable marketers and work stream leads to create individual channel strategies and communications

  • Activation plan that brings the creative campaign to life in a buzz-building launch moment

  • Act as the go-to-market lead across projects, working with the team to identify the key stakeholder team across the organization and leading out internal communications to those partners, including senior leadership.

  • Definition of a central post-launch test plan and ongoing areas of focus

  • Evangelize team launch formula, ensuring best-in-class go-to-market strategies across projects

  • This position requires close partnership and collaboration with key internal partners such as Product Management, New Product Development, Customer Marketing, Prospect Marketing, Brand, PR, Content Marketing, Experiential Marketing, Field Enablement, and Marketing Capabilities teams.

  • 7 years of work experience required, preferably within a marketing strategy, product marketing, brand marketing or product management organization
