Merck Associate Principal Scientist, Epidemiology in North Wales, Pennsylvania
Job Description
Under the general direction of a Director, Senior Director, or Executive Director, Epidemiology, the Associate Principal Scientist, Epidemiology (Senior Epidemiologist) has responsibility for the design, placement, conduct, analysis, and reporting of pharmacoepidemiologic research studies on assigned company products and for providing consultation on epidemiologic issues, as needed.
Key responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:
Serves as lead epidemiologist for major projects. The primary focus of this position is vaccines and infectious diseases (ID). Although staff are expected to develop primary subject matter expertise in one or more therapeutic areas, staff may receive assignments in any therapeutic area depending on need. Designs and coordinates all aspects of epidemiologic research programs, including protocol preparation, study design, supervising the ordering and shipping of all equipment and supplies, directing design and preparation of data collection forms and data tabulations, preparing data summaries/reports for regulatory submissions, publications and technical reports with delegation of certain tasks where possible.
Directs data management activities to ensure high quality. Performs analyses to process and summarize epidemiologic data. Determines own approach to tasks and independently applies basic and more complex techniques. Recognizes when additional statistical and programming consultation is needed and communicates requirements effectively. Maintains awareness of internal and external data resources and identifies appropriate studies for addressing questions of interest, recognizing the limitations and strengths of various design options. Provides consultation to other groups on the validity of observational studies. Independently performs data queries and summarizes epidemiologic information tabularly and graphically.
Proactively works with other groups to identify epidemiologic research needs for projects, and works interactively to develop research studies to address such needs. Develops and validates new measurement techniques and instruments for measurement of efficacy and safety endpoints for clinical trials. Critiques internally and externally written manuscripts/published literature. Provides epidemiologic consultation on clinical trial design, analysis, and interpretation.
Prepares reports to communicate epidemiologic study results to our company' management, internal committees, external investigators, and regulatory agencies. Collaborates with other groups at our company in preparing documentation for regulatory agencies, reimbursement agencies or other organizations.
Maintains professional knowledge by reading journals and textbooks, attending internal and external courses, and undertaking methodological research. Presents at professional scientific meetings, publishes research findings, teaches courses, collaborates with external investigators, and communicates with scientific personnel at regulatory agencies. Participates in training new department members.
Education Minimum Requirement:
Required: Master’s in Epidemiology with at least 5 years of relevant work experience
Preferred: PhD in Epidemiology with at least 3 years of relevant work experience
Preferred: MD with additional research training in epidemiology
Required Experience and Skills:
Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
Experience in the successful direction of epidemiologic projects; knowledge and experience in the application of epidemiologic approaches including statistics; and familiar with software packages used to process epidemiologic data
Creative problem-solving ability and strong communication and organizational skills
5% Travel
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Background in Vaccines and Infectious Diseases (ID), and experience in conducting ID and/or vaccine epidemiologic studies and activities are preferred for this position.

Final determinations with respect to salary will take into account a number of factors, which may include, but not be limited to the primary work location and the chosen candidate’s relevant skills, experience, and education.
Expected salary range:
$130,960.00 - $206,200.00
