Project Overview:

UPF is a multi-year, multi- billion dollar project and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provide enriched uranium capabilities well into the future.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will conduct field investigations and client interviews to determine work scope and cost estimates for a project’s control systems aspects. You will lead design, development, modification, and evaluation of control systems components and processes. Your recommendations will resolve technical issues and ensure unique and complex requirements of a project’s control systems aspects are met.

Major Responsibilities:

Level 1

  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard Control Systems engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications.

  • Participates in control systems software design, development, modification, system integration and testing utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).

  • Coordinates Control Systems engineering efforts in assigned areas with specialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendor, contractors, construction and other functional groups.

  • Prepares conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals.

  • Provides technical assistance to other Control Systems personnel and interacts with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues and industry codes and standards.

  • Provides assistance to project and startup management in identifying and complying with project Control Systems requirements and in addressing issues as they arise during project execution.

Level 2

  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard Control Systems engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria for a small size project or assignment in support of a global business unitor staff group to include the preparation of original designs layouts, details, drawings and specifications.

  • Software design, development, modification, system integration and testing utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).

  • When delegated, provides guidance to other Control Systems engineering personnel for specific tasks or projects.

  • Mentors and assists more junior Control Systems team members.

  • Completes Control Systems documentation and procedures for installation, configuration, integration, testing and maintenance.

  • Configures and tests components and equipment based on design documentation.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Level 1: Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience​.

  • Level 2: Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience.

  • Must be a US Citizen.

  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check, which includes verification of employment and education.

  • Must be able to obtain site security badge for access to work site.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 application suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, Power BI, etc.).

  • Knowledgeable of control system engineering work processes, procedures, and specifications.

  • Extensive experience with operations technology equipment and component configuration, integration and testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a nuclear quality and safety environment.

  • Previous DOE project experience.

  • Current working knowledge of engineering automation tools (e.g., Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI)).
