This role encompasses ownership of the enterprise Financial, Card Services for internal and external consumption, and transforming these services to our graph layer. The enterprise APIs are critical for powering Web functionality like My Card (MYCA) as well other digital channels like the American Express enterprise Mobile application and Phone channel.
This role requires deep technical experience in building modern REST API and setting standards and proper architecture. Teams throughout American Express rely on enterprise services to deliver their products and services. Positive relationships throughout the organization and excellent delivery are key attributes for this role.
What You'll Be Doing
Own the roadmap to transform the current enterprise financial and card Service using the enterprise GraphQL solution.
Partner with other engineering and product directors to drive omnichannel strategy and build common APIs for all channels.
Recruit and lead a group of talented engineers tasked with owning the future of the enterprise financial, card services for internal and external consumption.
Coach and develop talent and promote a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and technical excellence
Report to the VP of Engineering and work closely with other engineering and product leaders to define strategy and drive a customer-centric roadmap
Influence up/down/across and evangelize modern software engineering principles
Define software engineering practices and tooling: branching, code quality, build pipelines, contribution guides, monitoring strategy, etc.
Think out of the box and bring an external engineering expertise/perspective.
Define OKRs and core engineering KPI's to dive culture of continuous learning and improvements in the team.
Engage in 1-on-1 conversations with a team member to provide mentorship and career development planning

What You'll Need
Strong understanding of FaaS, Restful, and SOA architecture & technologies for large-scale environments.
Expertise in distributed architectural patterns: event-driven microservices, distributed transactions: sagas, CQRS, idempotent consumer, eventual consistency
Proven experience hiring, retaining, and leading high-caliber engineering talent.
Hands-on experience architecting and building modern REST APIs.
Advanced understanding of software design patterns: object-oriented, functional, reactive, data-intensive, scalability, availability principles.
Proficiency in modern Java (8 ): functional concepts, i.e., reactive streams, lambdas, concurrency.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to cater to a diverse audience: executive stakeholder, customer, partner, engineering
Experience working on SQL(relational) and NoSQL databases i.e., PostgreSQL , Oracle, CouchBase, Redis.
Commitment to drive a culture of accountability and ownership to empower teams.
Experience leading individual contributors and providing career direction, coaching, and development plans
BS or MS degree in computer science, computer engineering, or other technical disciplines.
Experience in a fast-paced startup environment
Hands-on experience implementing GraphQL.
Experience building high performing engineering teams.
