The Opportunity

As a dedicated Software Engineer Staff, you will lead our claims modernization efforts for our property and casualty insurance company. You will collaborate closely with Business, Architecture and Development leaders to translate business strategy and business architecture into technology vision, technology blueprints, architecture runway items, technical risk mitigation, and detailed designs.

The Staff Engineer will work closely with business, architecture and development teams to identify and resolve technical risks using Agile spikes and Proof of Concept activities in preparation for Program Increment sessions where the Staff Engineer will transition designs to the development teams to code the solution(s). The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of property and casualty insurance and modern cloud software development technologies while keeping an eye on emerging technologies.

Provides support to the Enterprise through delivering best in class technology solutions. Engaged in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle which include gathering and analyzing requirements, designing, testing, documenting, and implementing software, responding to outages. Serve as a primary conduit for enterprise architecture, alignment with enterprise technology strategy and roadmap, and major systems integrations.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ Or Charlotte, NC. Relocation assistance is available for this position.

What you'll do:

  • Design, develop, code, and test significant multi-functional technical solutions, often collaborating with engineers or architects outside of team/department.

  • Drive technology strategy within their domain aligning with Chief Technology Office

  • Lead code/design reviews to ensure smooth daily operations and accurate planning for multiple teams.

  • Organize work and lead multi-functional teams to deliver features and solutions.

  • Identifies and addresses production issue trends and establishes and shares solving methodologies.

  • Mentor and coach experienced engineers and provide business inputs and feedback to leadership.

  • Work with architecture to define directions for key technologies that impact the enterprise or a differentiating capability within a domain.

  • Advance professional development through active participation in industry organizations, writing programming publications, pursuing educational opportunities, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.

  • Use innovative problem solving and critical thinking approaches to proactively solve a broad range of problems across technologies.

  • Uses Site Reliability Engineering practices in their domain.

  • Experience briefing and advising executive leadership on technology initiatives.

  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 4 additional years of experience beyond the minimum requirement can be used in lieu of a degree

  • 10 years of software development experience demonstrating depth of technical understanding within multiple discipline(s)/technology(s) to include 3 years demonstrated leadership driving enterprise technology projects or initiatives.

  • 8 years of experience delivering technology solutions in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle.

  • Knowledge of emerging and/or evolution of existing technologies.

  • Demonstrated ability to act on all phases of the technology lifecycle.

  • Highly proficient in software engineering languages and tools; ability to develop on multiple platforms.

  • Demonstrated ability to systematically gather relevant information from different sources to address an issue and make a prompt and insightful decision.

  • Knowledge and advanced experience of leading code/design reviews.

  • Demonstrated ability to address production issues by fixing applications and systems.

  • Ability to quickly understand applicable business insight to provide appropriate Engineering solutions.

  • Deep Understanding of one or more of the following: Java, Swift, Objective-C, Cobol, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL.

  • Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining cloud technology and solutions.

  • Expertise in P&C offerings including Policy and Data domains

  • Strong expertise in application, data and infrastructure design and architecture.

  • Strong expertise in the design and coding of Modern Cloud (AWS) solutions.

  • Strong expertise in the design and coding of policy solution within guidewire

  • Knowledge of emerging trends and technologies in software development, with a focus on practical application in solution architecture

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $138,230.00 - $264,200.00 .

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
