Senior Director - Data Engineering

JC Penney is undergoing a significant transformational change and is looking for someone to bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to help us in this journey. As a senior director of engineering, you are someone who has experience working through organizational changes, has in depth experience with the product operating model and know what it means to shift to a DevOps model of development and ownership. You are deeply technical and know how to use that knowledge to help guide technical direction for a large organization.

As the Senior Director -Data & Business Intelligence, you will lead the engineering team responsible for developing solutions and integrating software for anEnterprise Data Platform.This person demonstrates accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives. In this role you will manage a team of talented engineers, technical architects, software developers, and test engineers and will be responsible delivering on company and team goals.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Own and deliver an Enterprise Data Platform including the strategy and roadmap across the entire data lifecycle from ingestion to consumption.

  • Serve as a thought leader to the organization in the areas of data, business intelligence, analytics, and the effective business use of data technologies.

  • Identify high impact project opportunities and process changes and improve productivity of the overall Data & Business Intelligence technical team.

  • Collaborate with business leaders to co-create strategic data solutions that directly address critical business challenges and drive measurable improvements in results.

  • Partner with Product Management to implement a data-driven prioritization framework, ensuring resources are aligned to initiatives with the highest potential business impact and value creation.

  • Deliver a DevOps model including support, agile, monitoring, and incident response tracking metrics.

  • Drive the development of innovative, future-proof technology solutions, including both cloud and on-premises architectures, while ensuring customization to meet evolving business requirements.

  • Responsible for leading a global engineering and development team.

  • Develop project estimates based on defined scope and customer acceptance criteria.

  • Responsible for establishing software development, software test methodologies and quality processes, e.g. design and code reviews.

  • Recruit, train, develop and retain team members.

  • Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments to executive management as appropriate.

  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.

Core Competencies & Accomplishments:

  • Deep knowledge and expertise in the Data, Data lifecycle, Data Modeling and Data Consumption.

  • Experience designing and implementing Data privacy, Data governance, Data Catalog & lineage programs.

  • Deep knowledge of modern data stack and infrastructures, i.e., AWS Cloud, Data warehouse/Data Lake/Data Mesh, data integration tools, Airflow, DBT, Snowflake, Redshift, Datameer, MicroStrategy,Tableau, etc.

  • Knowledge of patterns, architectures, and tools in the data domain.

  • Experience with Kafka in a Production environment

  • Business acumen with an understanding Retail, Product, and Finance landscapes

  • Experience working directly with business partners and leaders and managing issue escalation.

  • Experience managing and developing team members, mentoring colleagues to achieve career objectives, identifying and resolving performance issues.

  • Prior experience as a hands-on software engineer in a cloud-first development environment.

  • Experience with a product-led operating model

  • Experience and rolling out of a DevOps model and delivering Agile development tools.

  • Experience implementing an Agile SDLC for data, including ceremonies, metrics, and quality processes.

  • Strong ability to communicate cross-functionally, derive requirements and architect; to synthesize, simplify and explain complex problems to different types of audiences, including executives.

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Minimum Years of Experience: 15

  • Education in: "STEM" Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
