This position utilizes multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to sustain and continuously improve market released medical devices. This individual will be responsible for planning, coordinating and executing design change activities in support of business goals and must be able to analyze and resolve technical design related issues using objective engineering principles. This position requires knowledge and compliance in the areas of product design, design history files, design controls, test methodologies, verification / validation procedures, and root cause analysis. The position will be a liaison with cross-functional & cross-divisional departments and must be able to manage multiple deliverables while prioritizing their activities. Candidate must be clear and concise in their review and creation of technical documentation, drawings, procedures and test methodology, while using objective evidence when reviewing test data. This position interacts within a cross functional environment and requires strong verbal and written communication skills.
Impact this role will have on Abbott:
Provide general technical support for product development and system improvements.
Provide technical expertise in support of unplanned production issues (EOL, NCMR, Supplier Corrections)
Support design documentation preparation and review for market expansions
Run empirical and experimental analysis.
Plan, coordinate, and execute activity in support of business goals
Identify and mitigate project risks
Resolve and/or facilitate resolution of problems including identifying causes to prevent re-occurrence (CAPA).
Solve complex problems using material knowledge and engineering best practices.
Work cross functionally to determine the optimal course of action including impact to existing submissions and compliance certifications.
Work with outside consultants, vendors, and the medical community.
Ensure requirements of Design Controls are followed.
Ensure that the quality system requirements are being met.
Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
Mentor younger engineers in best practices and technology development
Perform other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.
Your experience(s), education and knowledge will further expand Abbott’s marketplace success:
5+ years of relevant product sustainment or R&D experience in the medical device industry.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or equivalent.
Experience providing ongoing sustaining technical support to a manufacturing organization.
Knowledge of medical device design controls and project management.
Demonstrated knowledge of sound design principles and practices.
Demonstrated knowledge of risk management techniques.
Demonstrated knowledge of CAPA process and root cause investigation.
Knowledge of statistical techniques and design of experiments.Experience with designing and testing medical devices.
Experience with schematic and PCB layout design and simulation tools.
Experience with embedded firmware design
Understanding of PCB assembly processes
Highly developed leadership skills/experience including ability to map task interdependencies, prioritize such tasks, meet deadlines and develop, monitor and live within budgets.
Ability to forecast major milestones.
Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross division business unit model preferred.
Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results.
Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.
