Powerhouse Chief Engineer

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Engineering, The Chief Engineer is responsible for the supervision of the Power Plant operating staff and directing the production and distribution of utility services in a safe, reliable, and efficient manner. The Chief Engineer is in operational control of the Steam Plant with pressures up to 900 psi, the Electric Cogeneration Plant with capacity 0f 15MW, the Demineralized Water Plant, compressed air system, potable water distribution system, and Plant process cooling tower. The Chief Engineer directs an operating staff of 24-hourly employees and is accountable for production, quality, environmental and safety considerations of the Power Plant.

Responsible for:

  • Directing the safe and efficient operation of the Power Plant equipment within design parameters to provide reliable utility services in support of Rahway site needs.

  • Developing and implementing operating procedures and strategies to make the most efficient use of workforce and equipment resources in response to a dynamic environment and changing

  • priorities.

  • Continually monitoring Power Plant operations, including reviewing operating logs, maintenance records, logics systems, communications, and field conditions. The reviews include checks accuracy investigating and /resolving discrepancies and making recommendations for operational and equipment improvements.

  • Overseeing the water chemistry-testing program to maintain standards for potable water, Demineralized water, boiler feed water and cooling water systems and responds to deviations.

  • The first-line supervision of twenty-four (24) licensed hourly operators. Ensures compliance with Code of Conduct, Local 68 I.U.O.E Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the Company personnel policies. Sets performance Expectations, builds an open and high performing team culture, and addresses labor relations grievances and assists in subsequent resolutions. •Preparing operating and vacation schedules for Power Plant personnel on seven-day stagger shift and fill vacancies in accordance with established procedures. Administers the absence control program in accordance with Company policy and Union contract.

  • Implementing operational training and development assignments to qualify operators’ advancement and promotion. Conducting training sessions with team to drive safe operating procedures and ensures that employees receive required safety and environmental training.

  • Following, modeling, advocating, and enforcing all site safety policies and procedures. Conducting safety inspections and monthly safety sessions. Contributing to achievement of safety performance goals and enforces operational housekeeping practices.

  • Must be knowledgeable of local, state, and federal laws and regulations (i.e., OSHA, RCRA, Air, Soil, Water Pollution Control and GXP) to ensure operational compliance within applicable permit guidelines.

  • Contributing to the energy and resource sustainability efforts.

  • Supporting special projects as directed by Associate Director of Engineering.

  • Being the liaison between the Power Plant and other Site groups, outside utility service, contractors.

  • Maintaining open and active communications with Site utility user (customer) groups with an objective to anticipate their needs, improve services and reduce expense.

  • Assisting in the development of Power Plant Standard Operating Procedures.

Position Qualifications :

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • High school diploma and technical training in steam generation and distribution required Mechanical Engineering degree preferred.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Must possess a New Jersey Gold Seal Stationary Engineer.

  • Working knowledge of hi pressure (900 psi) boiler plant and auxiliary systems operations.

Preferred Experience:

  • 5 to 10 years practical relevant experience in hi-pressure (900 psi) steam generation and 5 years in a supervisory position required.

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

$101,100.00 - $159,100.00
