Merck Senior Specialist, Engineering – GES in Rahway, New Jersey

Job Description

Position Responsibilities:

Senior Specialist operates under the guidance of the Technical Engineering and Technology Directors supporting Line of Business with focus on a growing portfolio of work in GES’ Northeast Region. The individual collaborates with other Integrated Project Team (IPT) members (e.g., Project Management, Technology, our Research & Development Division-Scientists, Maintenance, Automation, Plant Operations and Safety), Engineering Firms and Vendors to progress deliverables. The Senior Specialist is responsible for leading the planning, design, and implementation of engineering solutions on a suite team within a large capital project or leading small capital projects less than $25MM in value. Core work includes equip/scope generation, process & facility design, equipment selection, vendor interaction/management, factory acceptance testing, technology transfer support, construction support, equipment qualification, facility start-up and knowledge transfer.

Candidates with significant experience in engineering design (DS, DP, Plant and Clean utilities), product equipment operation, vendor management, process safety and industry guidance are preferred. Candidate should have demonstrated ability to lead a cross functional team through the design and execution, while championing innovative solutions that meet the objectives of the business. The candidate should have a strong understanding of the line of business, understand lean design and delivery, implement standard work and be able to lead technical areas and small capital projects from an end-to-end perspective. This position is based at Rahway-NJ site and requires to be at site Full-time. Flexibility with travel in excess of 25%.

The Senior specialist in GES Tech Center possesses a working level proficiency in the specification and design of DS & DP manufacturing and pilot-plant scale equipment, capital project planning and execution, Hazard Analysis, and commissioning & qualification.

The candidate will possess:

  • Excellent collaboration and engagement as a team player with the ability to build trust among a cross functional team.

  • Strong technical/engineering leadership, interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills to drive decision making and lead suite team members.

  • Project Size is anticipated to be >$25 MM.The position will require technical oversight to junior engineers and resources from an engineering firm and GES-Contractors.

  • Project/time management skills which deliver on time and quality work.

  • The ability to work independently to meet timelines in a fast-paced team-based environment.

  • Strong sense of self-motivation; proactive, high-energy, "can do" work ethic; ability to handle potentially stressful situations with attributes of a leader.

  • Capability to ensure deliverables conform to our Company standards and design practices; and are technically sound and fit for purpose.

  • Liaises with other technical functions to ensure successful technology transfers of new and in-line products.

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in a pharmaceutical engineering role, such as Process-Equipment Engineering Design, Technical Operations, Single Use Technology or Sterile Operations.

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience with capital equipment life cycle approach including specification, selection, testing & commissioning, troubleshooting and qualification.

  • Understanding of drug product equipment operation and design as it relates to primary packaging with a strong focus on product formulation and lyophilization.

  • Experience with projects that follow a stage gate capital management process.

  • Ability to travel up to 25% both domestic and internationally.

  • Experience with an equipment life cycle approach including specification, selection, testing & commissioning, troubleshooting and qualification.

  • Understanding of hygienic design and unit operations specific to vaccine/biologic manufacturing and aseptic processing

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Project/time management skills which deliver on time and quality work

  • Core knowledge should include specification of unit operations, P&ID development, Hazard Analysis, equipment operation, commissioning & qualification

  • Familiar and experience with chemical handling, biosafety (BSL-2&3), OEB4/5 liquid/solid handling containment approaches in terms of solution development.

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

Expected salary range:

$111,400.00 - $175,300.00
