This position plans, directs and manages the environmental, health and safety functions in the appropriate group within EHS organizations. Recognizes, evaluates, recommends and implements policies and procedures to assure awareness of and compliance with EHS requirements of the organization. Responsibilities include management of, as appropriate, groups of EHS subject matter experts, lab personnel, field support, or other EHS professionals. Effectively manages processes or programs including cross-cutting workflow, strategic planning and EHS Policy and Management System implementation. Duties include management and leadership of employee safety, strategic direction & goal alignment, planning, budgeting, performance management, integration, customer satisfaction and human resource issues. Persons filling this position may have combined EHS responsibilities or only environmental or health & safety responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned group within EHS functions, including strategic planning, budgeting, performance management, employee development and human resource issues. Develop processes, policy and related guidance; establish strategies, goals and performance expectations through collaboration within the department and with customers and stakeholders. Build EHS management system implementation capacity through leadership in mentoring and best practice sharing, assessing enterprise and business unit performance, and communicating plans and results to management and external stakeholders.

  • Work with departmental EHS leadership to develop common strategy and direction for the assigned group and achieve desired results. Provide leadership to identify, evaluate and focus on consistent EHS approaches and strategies to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, to identify and manage EHS risks. Ensure conformance, effective integration and implementation of the EHS Policy and Management System.

  • Build effective relationships with management. Interface with internal customers, internal and external stakeholders, and others as appropriate for the position to ensure that the functions assigned to the group are provided and delivered as expected and in a cost-effective manner. Ensure strategic alignment of EHS function with other groups in the company.

Basic / Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Science or Engineering and 7 years of work-related experience or High School diploma/GED and 15 years of work-related experience.

  • Leadership, management and supervisory skills.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills (e.g., influencing and listening skills to deal effectively with all levels of employees and management).

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Broad knowledge of appropriate EHS and department programs and procedures.

  • Ability to analyze data and develop appropriate strategic responses.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives or work groups in multiple locations.

  • Demonstrated experience in interfacing with and influencing regulatory agencies at the local, state and federal level.

  • In-depth understanding of inter-departmental relationships.

  • Awareness of regulations and issues affecting air, waste, and SPCC compliance.

  • Familiarity with Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas assets in the Carolinas.

  • Demonstrated experience using project management tools and concepts to drive expected outcomes.

  • Experience in reviewing, implementing, and ensuring compliance with complex environmental regulations.

  • Ability to take complex regulatory programs and communicate requirements to a diverse audience with varying levels of experience and backgrounds.
