Ethicon’s Robotic & Digital Solutions team, part of Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies, is recruiting for an R&D Systems Engineer, located in Redwood City CA

The R&D Systems Engineer is responsible for understanding and using data that is generated by the Monarch Platform, an endoscopy surgical robot. You will work with multi-functional teams to design, develop and improve upon groundbreaking medical devices through the use of data analysis. You will understand the system from both a technical perspective and the user’s viewpoint and will drive definition and development of the Monarch system using data-informed decision making. Core Job Responsibilities

  • Build reports for data analysis of performance and user interaction with the Monarch Platform

  • Translate clinical, business, and engineering data needs to output requirements for engineering definition of the system

  • Work cross-disciplinarily to provide hands-on system investigations and debugging

  • Develop test methods to accurately characterize and verify the system design against performance requirements using data

  • Generate use cases and risk assessments to facilitate systematic trade-off decisions and robust engineering solutions

  • Utilize sound engineering methods and documentation processes to perform design reviews and failure mode analyses


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical or any related engineering field, plus 2 or more years of relevant experience required

  • Proficiency with Python or MATLAB required

  • Skills and/or projects using data analysis, science, statistics, modeling, or other usage of data are required

  • Experience using large scale datasets to make decisions in an industry or research setting is preferred

  • Medical device experience is a plus

  • Good understanding of system lifecycle phases and design control processes preferred

  • Ability to work independently as well as on a multifunctional team

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Knowledgeable about FDA and ISO regulations. FDA CFR Part 820 and/or ISO 13485 knowledge is preferred.
