Project Overview:

We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.

Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.

Job Summary:

You will be working as part of the Mechanical Systems team designing the areas of material handling equipment, treatment and vitrification systems, and/or supporting utilities. You will be preparing P&ID revisions, detail drawings, design proposal drawings, and 3D Models. The ideal candidate will have experience in CAD software packages and SolidWorks. You will be interfacing and coordinating with engineering system engineers and other disciplines in the development of the design.

This position is a full-time role that offers part-time telework flexibility in the Richland, Washington project office. Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full time presence in the Richland Washington project office, then may offer part-time flexibility.

This position works a 9/80 schedule, offering every other Friday off.

Major Responsibilities:

Level 1

  • Drafts clear, complete, and accurate working plans, detail drawings or minor design arrangement from rough or detailed sketches or notes and from layouts or models according to specialized dimensions

  • May make sketches of proposed drawings, checking dimensions, materials to be used, the relation of one part to another, and checking the relation of various parts to whole structure

  • Makes any changes, adjustments, or corrections desired and submits drawings for inspection and approval

  • Utilizes knowledge of engineering practices, mathematics and building materials to complete drawings

  • May assist in design model construction, make material take-offs, and prepare material lists

  • Gathers information from vendor drawings, files, and other groups to use as guides in drawings

  • The primary role of the Mechanical Designer is supporting development and conveyance to advance/establish new and existing mechanical designs.

  • Working on CAD software, such as Solidworks, Microstation, to create drawings and models in line with engineering requests and to create design drawings in alignment with provided specifications.

  • Creating designs in accordance with company regulations and client standards and values.

  • Perform work using Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and appropriate 2-D and 3-D computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering (CAD and CAE) tools (Solidworks, Microstation).

  • Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

Level 2

  • Prepares 2-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings and modeling of Mechanical equipment, valve, and line lists from which detailed design 3-D CAD models and/or construction drawings are completed

  • Prepares portions of 3-D CAD design model under the supervision of experienced mechanical designers

  • Reviews and checks calculations, design models, drawings and design documents prepared by others in the group and by material suppliers, as assigned

  • Prepares bulk material quantity takeoffs and material requisitions for materials applicable to Mechanical

  • Works with designers in other disciplines in the overall assignment to coordinate designs

  • Answers questions from client or construction group on design for mechanical

  • Compiles, maintains, and accesses job drawing files, records, and drawing controls, as instructed

Education and Experience Requirements:

Level 1

  • AA degree with background in STEM related studies and proven experience/coursework relating to CAD/Mechanical design from an accredited university/college,

  • Requires 1-2 years of related experience

  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.

  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)

  • Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.

Level 2

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design including appropriate knowledge of CAD (2-D and 3-D).

  • Knowledge and ability to utilize Microsoft office suite of products.

  • Familiar with regulations and industry codes and standards affecting complex engineering work within discipline.

  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
