About the Legal Team

CarMax seeks motivated self-starters (for 2 positions) with strong academic credentials to join its in-house Legal team as law clerks. CarMax’s Legal team supports the company’s longstanding dedication to providing customers a best-in-class car buying experience. The team helps CarMax navigate extensive regulatory requirements in 41 states. The law clerks will be part of the CarMax Operations Legal Advisors team which advises CarMax’s main business operations, including but not limited to, retail motor vehicle sales, wholesale motor vehicle sales, Product teams, vehicle service and repair, marketing, and logistics. The law clerks serve as an integral part of the Legal team. The opportunities provide hands-on experience with a wide variety business law practice areas and are great for those who may be interested in the in-house/corporate practice of law.

Types of Projects

Candidate will work remotely assisting CarMax attorneys with research on diverse legal matters in a highly collaborative environment. Richmond area candidates will have the opportunity to work hybrid in the CarMax Home Office. While the position primarily supports the CarMax Operations Legal Advisors team, the law clerks have opportunities to work on projects from the entire Legal department (i.e. commercial contracting, corporate governance, labor and employment, data privacy, etc.). Sample projects from previous years include:

  • Research and analyze multi-state statutory and regulatory changes related to motor vehicle dealer operations

  • Assist with drafting motion for summary judgment in an employment law case

  • Research state-based lobbying requirements

  • Draft contract for third-party services

  • Analyze local ordinances related to wholesale auction operations

  • Complete legal checklists for new store openings

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Westlaw research skills, excellent communication skills and an interest in the intersection of business and law.

  • Experience preparing research memoranda and a general understanding of business issues and/or business experience strongly preferred.

  • One position is open immediately and will continue until May 2026.

  • One position is open between May 2025-May 2026.

  • For both positions, the ability to work full time during the summer and part time during the school year (12-15 hours per week) is required

Work Location and Arrangements : Work location is flexible if approved by the company.

The compensation for this position is Hourly: $20/hr
