About this job

The Manager, Corporate Accounting will lead a team responsible for the company’s cash management process. This includes being accountable for the integrity of financial information in all the company’s general ledger cash accounts by actively managing the timely transaction matching, analysis and reconciliation of cash deposits and disbursements within the company’s ERP. This role will be working within the team that owns CarMax’s close and consolidation processes.

In addition to the above, the Manager will be responsible for leading and supporting initiatives to enhance and centralize the cash management accounting functions previously mentioned. This individual is also expected to build and leverage cross-functional and external partnerships in support of departmental objectives, ensuring Accounting customers’ needs are met, and leading and developing a team of associates to execute on the department’s mission.

What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead a team responsible for the execution of the daily, weekly and monthly cash management processes within the company’s ERP (e.g. Oracle Cash Management, GL, ARCS).

  • Ensure financial controls are in place and operating effectively within the team, including but not limited to the analysis around key metrics, review of journal entries and account reconciliations.

  • Support the transformation of cash management to a best-in-class function through kaizen events, implementations, and other process improvement initiatives.

  • Operate as a key business partner to Financial Planning and Analysis, Shared Services, Treasury, CAF Accounting and other corporate functions.

  • Manage, lead and develop associates through timely performance feedback delivered during day-to-day observations, file reviews and an annual performance review. Responsible for creating individual development plans and business objectives designed to enhance and assist associate growth.

Purpose of the role

The Manager of Corporate Accounting is responsible for a team whose main objective is to support the completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of the Company’s financial information on a monthly and quarterly basis. This individual is expected to have a technical understanding of the Company’s general and corporate accounting areas as it relates to cash management and will serve as a “go-to” Accounting resource for various departments including Accounting Operations, Treasury and other core business areas.

  • Ensures valuable changes and improvements are identified, reinforced and sustained by their team

  • Ability to develop and execute a plan with minimal direction

  • Ability to develop and promote other associates for organizational needs

  • Ability to apply business and technical accounting knowledge to produce results and drive change

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Richmond, VA CarMax Home Office and have a Hybrid work arrangement

Education and/or Experience :

  • Four-year business degree with a concentration in Accounting or Finance

  • CPA preferred

  • Five or more years of relevant accounting experience, including at least three or more of those years with a large public company

  • Two or more years of experience leading teams to achieve common goals, including supervising direct and/or indirect reports

  • Experience with Oracle ERP preferred

  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and internal controls

  • Proven results in process improvement, project management and change management
