Pulsafeeder Product Packaging Project

Pulsafeeder manufactures, packages, and distributes fluid transfer pumps and solutions to domestic and international customers and distributers. We currently use a number of different protective packaging methods based upon the product size and fragility to prevent product damage during shipment. These include:

• Polyurethane spray foam

• Polyurethane foam bags

• Inflatable bubble wrap

• Cardboard box partitions

These methods are versatile and effective; however, we seek to explore and transition to packaging alternatives that are recyclable and biodegradable thereby reducing the environmental impact to our customers of waste packaging.

We are seeking a Packaging Engineering student to support this project.

Project parameters

Scope: Product packaging used in our manufacturing facility in Rochester, NY.

Actions required:

• Data compilation of products currently used for each packaging solution and costs incurred

• Establish criteria to determine acceptability of packaging to be used

• Conduct packaging assessment of current packaging and characterize potential alternatives

• Benchmark with other companies that have transitioned to sustainable packaging

• Work with Suppliers on candidate packaging

• Assessment and testing of protection level of alternative packaging

• Characterize pros and cons of sustainable packaging alternatives

• Implement beta test of proposed solution(s)

• Develop a business case for transitioning to potential alternative(s)

Skills required of student:

• Currently pursing a degree in Packaging Science/Packaging Engineering

• Organizational skills in managing a project in a manufacturing setting

• Collect and stratify moderate amounts of data

• Knowledge and application of packaging standards and test methods

• Good communication skills and able interface with shop floor personnel, engineers, and external suppliers

• Able to establish a business case for any change in material, equipment, or process.

Estimated duration of project:

Estimate 3 months of full-time work. Or approximately 450 hours.

Total Rewards

The compensation range for this position is $35,600.00 - $53,400.00, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
