BAE Systems Chief Engineer - Integrated Defense Solutions in Salt Lake City, Utah

Job Description

BAE Systems Integrated Defense Solutions (IDS) business is seeking a Chief Engineer to lead the development of key technologies and the systems engineering and integration (SE&I) activities to maintain competitive advantage in the marketplace and performance excellence for our programs. The candidate must be capable of executing an integrated engineering concept of operations (CONOPS) in direct support of our business objectives. The selected individual will coordinate a streamlined, integrated engineering organization to deploy engineering resources and support to IDS programs and business captures. As the engineering authority, the candidate will be responsible for all engineering mandates of the Lifecycle Management (LCM) framework including engineering policy, product safety policy, independent design reviews (IDR), and technical bid reviews (TBR). This position will serve as the focal point of cross-business and cross-sector engineering coordination and collaboration within BAE Systems as well as the engineering point of contact for external interfaces.

IDS is a Business Area within the Intelligence & Security (I&S) sector of BAE Systems Inc. The IDS Chief Engineer will report directly to the IDS Senior Director for Strategy and Engineering Technology and will be a member of the IDS senior leadership team. The role can be based at one of our BAE regional offices and will require regular travel to the I&S headquarter offices in McLean, VA as well as other sites and customer locations.

Specific responsibilities of this position will include but not be limited to:

  • As the IDS engineering authority, ensure compliance and execution of the engineering mandates in the Lifecycle Management (LCM) framework including engineering policy, product safety policy, independent design reviews (IDR) and technical bid reviews (TBR)

  • Serve as the manager for the program Chief Engineers across the IDS business portfolio; provide coaching and technical guidance to direct reports to ensure programs successfully meet contract commitments

  • Exhibit technical thought leadership and subject matter expertise by participating in external forums as a speaker, presenter, panel member or academic collaborator

  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert for business captures and provide technical leadership to overall solution development and construction of proposal artifacts

  • Ensure that the technical solutions of business proposals are innovative as well as operationally viable and financially sound

  • Actively engage in strategic workforce planning (SWP) and critical skills identification to grow thought leaders to shape and help win future business

  • Support the development and regular updates to technology career pathways including the identification of professional certifications

  • Support the IDS Senior Director for Strategy and Engineering Technology in the development and execution of technical roadmaps to drive the organization s strategic growth objectives and integration of new technologies

  • Champion and execute the IDS digital engineering strategy including workforce development through the MBSE Catalyst Program

  • Support the development of the IDS Integrated Business Plan (IBP), Merger & Acquisition (M&A) recommendations and assessments, and other artifacts to support key leadership business decisions

  • Collaborate with external partners and vendors to leverage technology expertisetrack key industry partners and small businesses that enable IDS strategic plans and captures

  • Monitor industry trends and developments to identify opportunities and potential risks

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • BS in engineering or related technical curriculum (computer science, mathematics, physics)

  • TS/SCI level clearance eligible

  • A minimum of twelve years experience leading complex engineering organizations

  • Significant experience with or knowledge of systems integration, weapon systems development, Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), IT services, deployment of cloud and high-performance computing, cyber security, and software development across all phases of the engineering lifecycle

  • Thorough understanding of industry best practices in engineering services development and management processes

  • Experience in proposal processes and development

  • Excellent intellectual and analytical capabilities, pragmatic problem-solving skills, strong communications and influencing capabilities, a robust strategy and change management toolkit, and a passion to effect change across the organization

  • Proven critical thinking, analytical, and quantitative abilities

  • Strong communication skills including experience in developing executive-level presentations

  • Collaborative work style/leadership presence with ability to effectively interact with and earn trust of peers and senior management across the organization

  • Project and process management skills including proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Executive presence: self-starter with a keen sense of ownership and commitment to the work and a passion to deliver results

  • Proven experience leading large geographically-diverse teams; strong coaching and mentoring skills; ability to achieve results through others

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Post-graduate degree in engineering/technical or management-related discipline

  • Knowledge and experience working in DoD technical services industry

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $164000 - $278800

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
