The Neuroimmunology discovery team in Janssen Neuroscience is seeking to hire a neurobiologist with demonstrable expertise evaluating the role of microglia in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases. Candidates with a keen interest in addressing microglial dysregulation in Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and/or Mood Disorders are highly encouraged to apply. We are seeking a candidate who can design and lead microglia-focused drug discovery projects within a diverse Neuroimmunology team, driven by a special interest in the potential link between microglial dysfunction and CNS disease. The qualified candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in neuroscience, biology, pharmacology, or physiology with several years of highly productive drug discovery experience in neuroinflammatory disorders of the CNS. A track record of delivering impactful solutions to complex problems, and evidence of strong cross-functional collaboration is expected. Experience leading small groups of scientists, leading projects, and defining group or departmental strategy will aid in distinguishing candidates. An established reputation for scientific excellence supported by publications and external presentations on microglia and neuroinflammation is expected.
Ph.D. degree with 3-8 years of post-doctoral microglial biology experience either in academia or industry is required.
Doctoral dissertation on glial biology is a definite plus.
The ideal candidate should understand the big picture of drug discovery and clinical development, particularly how their projects will ultimately address patients’ unmet needs. She/he must be able to design critical hypothesis-driven, decision-enabling, clinically testable experiments based on evolving data (internal and external).
Must be an expert microglial biologist, as demonstrated by impactful first-author publications or advances in the prosecution of microglial drug targets
Hands-on experience culturing with iPSC-derived and primary microglia (human/rodent) is a must. Ability to model microglial inflammation and related disease phenotypes is a key skill set. Neuron-glia co-culture and organoid experience is an advantage.
Skills needed to probe microglial activation in-vivo (transcriptomics to proteomics) in models of neuroinflammation are also preferred. Prior experience in single cell microglial omics from neurological disease models is a definite plus.
The candidate must be comfortable working in the laboratory and should be proficient with flow cytometry and immune cell sorting from peripheral and brain tissues. The candidate must be motivated to learn new techniques at a fast pace, as well as innovative and be scientifically curious.
A broad understanding of drug discovery process, managing people and projects in a fast-paced environment is critical for this role. Previous experience working in a matrix environment is preferred.
The candidate maybe expected to lead a team of neuroscientists and must enjoy leading people and being a mentor to staff and team members. Good communication and team management skills are essential for the position.
