Job Profile Summary:

Role Synopsis

Advanced Bio & Physical Sciences for Low Carbon Energy (AB&PS) develops strategic and business solutions for new low carbon technologies and products. A recently created team, AB&PS is the central research organization for biosciences, chemistry, chemical engineering science, materials sciences, biofuels, green hydrogen/electrochemistry and the science of carbon capture. This team also hosts bp’s capability in computational modelling of biosciences and chemistry.

The bp Biosciences Center (BSC) in San Diego is the hub for bp’s biosciences R&D capability. The BSC works to identify current opportunities and assess future opportunities across the range of bp’s businesses, supporting bp’s ambition to reach net zero by 2050 or sooner. The Center stays closely connected to bp businesses and external technologies, and ensures the expertise required to progress opportunities through the early stages of technology development. The Center also advises businesses on biological issues and partnership opportunities. The team is comprised of flexible, agile, multi-skilled, innovative members that work collaboratively across the research portfolio.

The individual, reporting to the Fermentation Lead, will join a group of interactive scientists and should have strong interpersonal skills and outstanding problem solving and critical thinking skills, with a strong interest in the pursuit of scientific discovery. This position requires hands on work at the bench with a history of delivering experimental results.

Key Accountabilities

The primary accountabilities of the position are:

  • Conduct experiments that deliver needed results for Advanced Bio & Physical Sciences for Low Carbon Energy (AB&PS)

  • Operate independently, create and transfer SOPs, design experiments and work on multidisciplinary teams

  • Critical scientific thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Promote safety initiatives and champion compliance

Job Requirements

We are looking for someone with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in bioengineering, biochemistry, biology, analytical chemistry, molecular biology, biology, food science, chemistry or related fields with 2+ years of research lab experience.

This person should have experience in/with:

  • Microbial fermentation, such as fermenter set-up and breakdown, media preparation, and sterile technique.

  • Laboratory methods common to microbiology and biochemistry.

  • Understanding microbiology, biochemistry and analytical chemistry principles.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time.

  • Reliably and accurately executing tasks following SOPs as well as formulating new SOPs.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience with fermentation control software and data historians, such as DeltaV, MFCS, and PI.

  • Experience in biochemistry techniques such as protein expression and purification and assay execution or development.

  • Experience in laboratory automation workstations and/or high throughput screening.

  • Knowledge of experimental design, data analysis, troubleshooting and literature search capabilities.
