Project Description

Bechtel has been appointed by The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) to provide Construction Management Services for Phase II (BSVII) of The BART Silicon Valley Program. The Program further extends the BART system from the Berryessa Station in north San Jose, through downtown San Jose, and continuing to Santa Clara University.

This landmark project is a six mile, four-station extension, linking the Phase I terminus at the Berryessa/North San Jose BART station to the Santa Clara Station in the City of Santa Clara. BSVII is planned to include a 54-foot single-bore tunnel, three underground stations, one at-grade station and a maintenance facility.

Bechtel is seeking a Lead Construction Coordinator (Client Title: Senior Office Engineer) to join the Construction Management execution team. As a candidate, you will bring experience and expertise to the role while working within the client’s organisation as part of an integrated team. Responsibilities

  • Provides direction to junior Office Engineers relating to the coordination of utility relocation scopes and other works, as necessary.

  • Coordinates the execution of the early utility relocation scope.

  • Build or continue to build relationships with utility companies interfacing with the project and represent the interests of the project.

  • Coordinates the construction schedules of works performed by utility companies.

  • Monitor execution of works performed by utility companies in the field.

  • Identify solutions relating to constructability issues associated with works performed by utility companies in the field.

  • Coordinate with utility companies for unknown utility identification.

  • Coordinate with utility companies developing solutions to utility clashes in the field by other contractors.

  • Collaborate with the integrated project team, including but not limited to Technical Authority. Provide constructability feedback and input, either directly or through consultation with discipline specialists.

  • Facilitate and lead the inclusion of appropriate lessons learned into the development of the contract work packages.

  • Provide input to schedule preparation and monitor/report progress against schedule.

  • Defining work package breakdown and definition of interfaces and identification of gaps.

  • Monitor the activities of contractors to ensure compliance with ES&H, quality requirements & project technical requirements. Undertake site inspection duties enforcing a “Zero Accident Philosophy”.

  • Monitor contractor progress prepare and process periodic progress estimates/ reports.

  • Coordinates and resolves engineering or construction problems in collaboration with the project technical authority. Assist in the review of technical submittals (drawings and other documents submitted by vendors.)

  • Organize, facilitate-participate, and provide input in project meetings. Communicate with other project stakeholders and prepare meeting notes/ project memorandums/presentations/status reports/ as appropriate.

  • Inspect work to ensure compliance with contract documents.

  • Coordinate with designers, contractors, utilities, stake holders, client, and others as required to ensure a successful resolution to identified issues.

  • Interfaces with field inspectors (field engineers), subcontractors, office engineers, designers, clients, and utilities aiding in the interpretation of engineering design documents, vendor documents, and other technical documents

  • Provides technical support of assigned subcontractor(s).

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of

  • relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience

  • Extensive prior construction and engineering experience on large scale infrastructure projects.

Additional Qualifications

  • Demonstrated technical writing, data management, verbal communication, presentation, and teaching skills.

  • Prior experience in construction and engineering preferred.

  • Prior experience with utility relocation and license agreements for major infrastructure projects, including rail, design-build, and/or other complex projects.

  • Ability to engage and collaborate with local communities.

  • Ability to proactively act upon and solve construction and contract issues.

  • Ability to read and interpret contract documents, construction plans, and specifications.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Strong time management skills and excellent attention to detail.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced collaborative environment.

  • Able to obtain a valid California Class C driver’s license within 60 days of starting on the project.
