In this role, you will get to learn and use a variety of different technology and leak detection instruments as you perform leak surveying on our distribution system. As a leak detection specialist, you will respond to customer complaints, perform leak surveying, and follow up on leak investigations. Our ideal candidate will be technlogically savvy, have strong communication skills and thrive working independently. * Primary Role* To perform a variety of tasks in coordinating and conducting Leak Detection Survey(s) on all Company transmission and distribution main, service lines, or other facilities. Also “pinpoints” all detected leakage, and assists other departments as needed in locating leakage originating from customer complaints. * Key Accountabilities* * Perform Leak Detection Survey using all Leak Detection equipment on Company water main and service pipes and other facilities. * Pinpoint underground leakage using all available Leak Detection equipment. * Locate company facilities such as gate valves and curb valves for use in leak surveys. * Manual digging and exposing of valve boxes and curb boxes using shovel, pick, pry bars, etc. * Operation of valves and fire hydrants. * Investigate complaints and determine corrective action per Company procedures. * Read and interpret distribution system maps to plan efficient survey routes. * Accurately complete all necessary forms and sketches. * Drive vehicles or trucks in performance of general job. * Be available for call out and scheduled overtime. * Any other duties that may be assigned by a Supervisor. * Knowledge/Skills* * Valid PA driver’s license * Communicate in effective manner, both orally and in writing, with Company personnel. * Ability to comply with Company’s attendance and safety policies. * Ability to read and understand instructions, safety rules, maps, diagrams, etc. * Ability to read and perform basic math. * Available for call out 24/7 and some shift work when required. * Ability to use, and familiarity with, various leak detection instrumentation. * Good working knowledge of hydraulic principals. * Computer skills. * Experience/Education* * Prior maintenance and operational duties on a water system. * High School graduate or State recognized Education Equivalency Certificate. * Prior work in leak detection position. * Water audit experience. * Specialized leak detection training courses. * Able to obtain and maintain a DEP Class E license with two (2) years of hire * Additional Preferred Qualifications* Knowledge: * * Prior knowledge of Leak Detection Methodology, such as sonic amplification technology; Leak correlation; Pitometer studies; Permalogger technologies. * General knowledge of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Water Distribution Systems. * Ability to use distribution system maps and records. * Knowledge of Company procedures. * Work Environment * Work outdoors in all climates with no effective protection from weather. * Able to tolerate excessive bending, kneeling, and crouching. * Able to walk varied terrains up to and exceeding 2 miles daily. * Hearing Sensitivity- must be able to hear and differentiate between high and low frequency sounds. * Lifting 100 lbs. * Hours/Schedule* * Full-time * * Third shift, 11pm-7:30am EST* * Available for call out 24/7 and some shift work required * Competencies* Champions safety Collaborates Cultivates innovation Customer obsessed Drives Results Nimble learning * Join American Water...We Keep Life Flowing™ * American Water is firmly committed to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and prohibits employment discrimination for employees and applicants based on his or her age, race, color, pregnancy, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, marital status, citizenship, or because they are an individual with a disability, protected veteran or other status protected by federal, state, and local laws.
