Weyerhaeuser Forest Carbon Analyst in Seattle, Washington

You are an experienced analyst interested in natural climate solutions and developing forest carbon projects in working forests. You have experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), forest inventory and analysis, research,R and/or Python programming, and other areas of the forest industry. You are eager to learn, engage with subject matter experts, and other stakeholders. You enjoy working in a team environment and you look for opportunities to improve processes. You apply your technical expertise to ensure analytical rigor, effective project design, and implementation of our decision support tools. This position reports to the Forest Carbon Manager as part of the Portfolio Analytics & Business Development team within Weyerhaeuser’s Corporate Development Organization. This position will be based in Seattle, Washington or Atlanta, Georgia. Consideration will be given to other locations.

In this role you will work on a diverse range of projects involving GIS, carbon project document preparation and review, forest inventory data management and analysis, carbon project modeling, economic modeling, and project compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Use a full range of advanced spatial data and systems, growth and yield models, and internal databases to process, calculate, and analyze forest inventory data
  • Conduct statistical analysis of forest inventory and related data using industry standard approaches and software
  • Support design and evaluation of forest inventories and sampling protocols for estimation of carbon and other forest inventory variables
  • Use carbon registry guidance to develop and edit documents that comply with approved methodologies for validation and verification of forest carbon projects
  • Manually create, edit, and update spatial data and attributes
  • Create detailed and meaningful maps and data visualizations
  • Stay current with the latest academic and news articles related to forest carbon and regularly present the contents of these articles to diverse audiences

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in GIS, Forestry, Natural Resources, or related field is required.

  • Masters level degree preferred
  • We place an emphasis on what prior experience our candidates bring to the table. This role typically requires a minimum of 2 years of prior experience in using ESRI ArcGIS or equivalent, for spatial analysis is required. This role will work with Weyerhaeuser’s forestry GIS system (FMS) as well as Esri’s ArcGIS suite.
  • Experience in coding and programming (e.g., R, Python, SQL, Git)
  • Familiarity with voluntary forest carbon markets and modeling of forest carbon projects
  • Understanding of industry standard forest growth and yield models (FVS, FPS, ORGANON, SiMS, etc.) to aid in the development of forest carbon offset projects
  • Understanding of forest operations, including harvesting and silvicultural methods used in forests throughout the United States.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to be a team player and support colleagues in all aspects of the company.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time to meet deadlines.

Our Investment in You: What We Offer

Compensation: This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $72,800 to 109,000 based on your level of skills, qualifications, and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 7% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Retirement: Employees can enroll in our company’s 401k plan, which includes a paid company match in addition to our annual contribution equal to 5% of your base salary.

Paid Time Off or Vacation: We provide eligible employees who are scheduled to work 25 hours or more per week with paid vacation for up to 3 weeks to use during your first year of employment. In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, providing a total of 88 hours along with paid parental leave for all full-time employees.
