Job Summary and Mission

We are looking for a strong engineering leader to join our Workforce Management Technology group to support Starbucks mission and values.

As an engineer manager, you will contribute to the development of our next-generation Workforce Management (WFM) system that is leveraged by 240,000+ partners (employees) across 10,000+ locations (e.g., stores, roasteries, manufacturing plants, and distribution centers) in the United States and Canada. The Starbucks Workforce Management solution optimizes store operations and partner’s work-life balance by providing intuitive and advanced planning, forecasting, scheduling, time & attendance, and labor analytics cloud-enabled and mobile services. The solutions you will be leading must be able to handle information at a global scale and integrate with other cloud-based Starbucks systems (SaaS, PaaS).

Responsibilities

  • Leading and managing a team of software engineers, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management.

  • Overseeing the planning, execution, and delivery of software projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and according to quality standards.

  • Providing technical guidance and direction to team members, assisting them in problem-solving and decision-making, and ensuring adherence to best practices and coding standards.

  • Allocating resources effectively, including personnel, budget, and technology infrastructure, to support project requirements and team goals.

  • Communicating with stakeholders, such as clients, product managers, and executives, to understand requirements, provide updates on project status, and address concerns or issues.

  • Identifying and mitigating risks that may impact project success, such as technical challenges, resource constraints, or changes in requirements.

  • Continuously improving software development processes and methodologies to increase efficiency, productivity, and quality of deliverables.

  • Collaborating with other teams, such as product management, design, quality assurance, and operations, to ensure alignment of goals and effective coordination of efforts.

  • Supporting the professional development of team members through training, mentoring, and opportunities for growth and advancement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline

  • 8+ years experience in modern languages such as Java, JavaScript, Python

  • 6+ years of experience designing, building , and supporting mission-critical, highly scalable, highly available , and fault-tolerant enterprise-level applications on cloud platforms such as Azure, GCP, AWS, or similar platforms. 

  • 5+ years of Engineering leadership experience in delivering complex, time-sensitive enterprise initiatives across organizational boundaries

  • 5+ years of Engineering leadership experience in big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Databricks, or similar distributed computing frameworks and NoSQL databases.

  • 5+ years of technical leadership experience in data modeling, data warehousing, and enterprise data integration techniques.

  • 5+ years of Engineering leadership experience in DevOps practices and tools for automation, configuration management, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and building solutions that integrate with enterprise workforce management platforms (BlueYonder, UKG, Legion, Infor).

  • Retail and/or quick service restaurant (QSR) industry experience.

  • Experience leading, coaching, and managing geographically dispersed teams.
