Role reports to: Manager, Baby Care R&D

Location: Skillman, NJ Kenvue’s corporate headquarters is currently located in Skillman NJ, but is scheduled to move to Summit, NJ in or around early 2025.

Travel %: 10%

What you will do

The senior scientist will lead regional and global projects for brands such as Aveeno Baby & Aveeno Kids and will be directly responsible for new product formulation, process development and scale-up activities to execute time-bound projects. This candidate will rely on strong technical skills to independently execute projects with hands-on involvement, and will need to incorporate strategic consumer, category, and business insights to deliver business goals. They will also partner closely with all functions responsible for launching a product to help assess risk, understand and proactively solve for potential hurdles to ensure successful new product launches.

Strong communication skills together with the ability to manage complexity are must-have prerequisites. Ability to manage routine organizational processes, demonstrating prudent risk-taking and decision-making skills which are essential components of this role; providing guidance and solutions to technical problems with technical rigor and deep organizational knowledge. Technical writing skills are highly desired as the candidate may draft and execute, technical reports, patent fillings, and peer reviewed manuscripts as appropriate. Responsibilities might also include coaching junior scientists.

Responsibilities:

  • Independently formulate and develop baby and kids skincare and haircare prototypes and establish technical expertise in the baby care field, from feasibility to formulation and process as well as life cycle management activities.

  • Independently build exploratory DOEs, execute lab stability, establish efficacy, and incorporate consumer insights to establish consumer & customer acceptance.

  • Plan and support documentation and execution of GMP pilots and trials, safety, claim-support consumer testing, and other clinical and non-clinical evaluations.

  • Collaborate and lead discussions with project teams (Packaging, Manufacturing, Marketing, Project Management, Claims, Consumer Science, Safety, Tox, Micro, Analytical, Sourcing, Raw Material Center, etc.) to ensure all project deliverables are met and on-time.

  • Proactively identify areas of risk associated with projects/ ideas/ platforms, evaluate all opportunities to minimize or solve potential issues and develop mitigation plans. Participate in operational project team meeting. Attend and provide active input to project meetings and project related documentation, including leading technical discussions with cross functional partners.

  • Have the proactive foresight of potential project obstacles and develop risk mitigation plans and troubleshoot formulation, processing, and scale-up issues.

  • Interact with suppliers to bring in new technologies and collaborate with upstream and translational sciences teams to implement new technologies and optimize the delivery and efficacy of those ingredients.

  • Analyze consumer and market trends to understand our competitive set and landscape of products in the category. Identify how our products can improve on points of uniqueness and differentiation to truly delight the consumer.

  • Understand how to improve and build on our End to End Baby R&D pipeline initiatives; communicate the science, innovation and consumer insights through educating the media, influencers, customers, etc.

  • Competently handle day-to-day work challenges and adapt to changes in the work environment.

The scope of work will include:

  • Product and process development/process scale-up

  • Identification of critical process parameters at the lab, pilot, full manufacturing scales, and understanding of processing equipment

  • Product/process specification development

  • Process validation

  • Executing the technical aspects of projects

  • Interacting with and/or leading cross-functional teams to implement timely new product introductions

  • Driving technical resolutions in manufacturing

  • Troubleshooting product issues under aggressive and sometimes compressed timelines

Qualifications

What we are looking for

Education:

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of related experience (academic or industry) is required (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or other related science or engineering subject area is preferred), or a Master's degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience or a PhD Degree in a relevant field.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with formulation and/or product and process development/scale-up is required

  • A good technical foundation of formulated products including emulsions, surfactants, suspensions, an understanding of material chemistry and process equipment is required

  • Cosmetics, OTC or pharmaceutical experience is required

  • Ability to work cross-functionally in a team environment while being an individual contributor is required.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required

  • Solid MS Office (Word, Excel & Powerpoint) proficiency is required

  • Must be proficient in English

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with external manufacturing and technical project management

  • People leadership skills

  • Familiarity with cGMP and other regulatory requirements
