The Cell Therapy group of Janssen Therapeutics Discovery seeks an innovative Principal Scientist to join the Cell Therapy Gene Editing team. In this immunology-focused role you will lead a group of talented scientists to discover and validate molecular approaches to engineer best-in-class CAR T cells. Collaborating closely with the iPSC Editing, Molecular Design, CAR screening, and Intrinsic Biology teams, you will develop creative next-generation solutions to overcome barriers to the efficacy of autologous and allogeneic CAR T cells in cancer. Success in this role will require foundational knowledge of not only T cells, but also innate and humoral mechanisms that lead to suppression and elimination of CAR T cells. Key Responsibilities:
Lead an Immunology-focused research group to study and devise molecular solutions to challenges facing cell therapies, such as allogeneic host versus graft rejection and poor activity in solid tumor microenvironments.
Advance projects through hands-on benchwork in addition to leading a team of lab-based scientists.
Utilize an array of molecular and cellular techniques to critically evaluate proposed strategies and uncover new biological insights.
Collaborate across functional groups to coordinate multiple complex research plans.
Provide mentorship and support to direct reports and other team members as a subject matter expert.
Generate new research ideas and initiatives.
Present research findings and propose strategic recommendations that help shape the direction of Janssen’s Cell Therapy portfolio.
Champion a creative, rigorous, and collegial culture of scientific discovery.
Qualifications
PhD in Immunology, Immuno-oncology, or Cell and/or Molecular Biology with a minimum of 5 years post-doctoral experience and a strong record of innovation and publication is required.
Immune cell biology expertise with the ability to apply skills, theoretical knowledge, and experience to drive successful research projects is required.
Strong theoretical and practical understanding of T, NK, and myeloid cells in addition to humoral immunity is required.
Self-starter attitude paired with the ability to work within a team and collaborate with colleagues is required.
Strong people leadership skills and ability to lead, mentor, and grow a team is required.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are required.
Hands-on experience gene editing primary T cells is preferred.
Experience developing allogeneic cell therapies is preferred.
Experience with high throughput arrayed and pooled screening is preferred.
This role is based in Spring House, PA and may require up to 10% travel.
