JOB SUMMARY:

The Materials Scientist is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality production of materials for use in the production of technical ceramic components.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Assist in developing and refining specifications for existing and newly developed materials

• Assist in the creation and implementation of new material products and technology from concept/lab scale to production

• Work with cross functional teams for continuous improvements of existing technical body preparation, including operating equipment

• Troubleshoot material quality issues with internal and external powder customers

• Support improvement workflow with respect to lean and 5S business practices

• Coordinate and develop processes and protocols for the production of new materials

• Assist in the creation, documentation, and implementation of developmental material technology transfer from concept / lab scale to production

• Other engineering and administrative duties and projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Ceramics or Materials Science

• Demonstrated proficiency in the technical nuances of raw material testing

• Demonstrated expertise in the production and testing of ceramic compositions and sintered compositions using all recognized material science and analytical tools

• Knowledge of Excel, Access, and Word in a Microsoft Office environment

• Basic knowledge of relational databases

• Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to “think on one’s feet” and make logical and timely decisions under pressure

• Strong communication and writing skills

• Above average mechanical aptitude

• Familiarity with basic analytical testing equipment for the materials industry

• Ability to work with and supervise other team members

• Ability to work independently in a self-motivated fashion and “wear many hats” daily

• Strong organizational skills with high functioning work prioritization and time management

• Able to build mutual respect and creates confidence in the workplace with other employees

• Reliable and committed to meet goals set by management

• Enthusiastic working attitude willing to go “above and beyond”

• Ability to multitask and handle stressful work deadlines

• Strong leadership skills and “job ownership” with an interest in personal growth

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is normally performed on site at STC’s office in St. Albans, Vermont, but can require travel within the country. Office work may be performed in a climate-controlled office environment. Most lab conditions are similar to office environment with a climate-controlled environment. The majority of working time will be on the shop floor supporting production which can be noisy and dusty, as well as hot during the summer. Proper safety equipment is provided by STC where necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work involves standing and walking throughout the office and shop floor, as well as sitting. There is potential for eyestrain from reading detailed materials and computer screen. Deadlines, workloads during peak periods and changing priorities may cause increased stress levels. Work will include bending and

squatting, as well as pushing, pulling, or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
