The Opportunity

This position works out of our St. Paul, MN location in the Structural Heart division. Our business purpose is to restore health and improve quality of life through the design and provision of device and management solutions for the treatment of structural heart disease.

As the Calibration Metrologist, you’ll have the chance to work with test and measurement equipment performing complex, multi-discipline electrical, dimensional and physical calibrations on all measurement and process control equipment. This position upgrades calibration equipment and automate repetitive calibration processes. Individuals reviews/validate complex calibration procedures, metrology software and establish new measurement standards. Individuals provide regulation compliance recommendations for GMP, FDA, ISO 9000, ISO 13485, ISO 17025, ASTM, ANSI and NCSLI. This position performs outside calibration supplier evaluation and assists in designing measurement systems for product test and process control. Individuals develop equipment specifications, develop and write calibration procedures based on equipment specifications using spreadsheet, flow chart and word processing software and programming software. Individuals review documentation, checklists and manuals for accuracy and completeness, perform data analysis, measurement studies and calibration certificate analysis. Individuals will participate in professional organizations and committees to set the standards and requirements for education, calibration and measurement assurance programs.

What You’ll Work On

  • Research, evaluate and implement software and programs related to calibration measurement and management

  • Perform root cause analysis on Out-of-Tolerance equipment and assign corrective actions as needed

  • Support measurement systems across division lines

  • Provide calibration planning on production line moves and transfers

  • Perform Inter-laboratory comparisons

  • Perform multi-discipline calibrations and complex measurement systems

  • Plan training or calibration trips to off-site facilities

  • Travel by air to remote manufacturing sites to provide training and support

  • Design calibration equipment and systems as required

  • Optimize the performance of the calibration equipment and systems

  • Select standards for complex/system calibration procedures based on tolerance accuracy ratios, specifications and measurement uncertainty

  • Provide training sessions and perform presentations

  • Perform measurement uncertainty analysis

  • Write/review equipment specifications

  • Write/review complex calibration procedures from equipment specifications

  • Perform programming validation related to procedure writing

  • Develop department procedures governing calibration tasks

  • Provide regulation compliance recommendations for GMP, FDA, ISO 9000, ISO 13485, ISO 17025, ASTM, ANSI and NCSLI

  • Research calibration standards

  • Justify equipment expenditures for capital equipment requests

  • Provide equipment control review

  • Handle preventative/corrective actions

  • Submit change orders

  • Research complex repair situations and determine action steps

  • Perform analysis for repair prevention

  • Perform repairs, modifications and upgrade to calibration standards

  • Perform and review out-of-tolerance reports of metrology standards for risk assessment to previous equipment calibrations

  • Use calibration data base systems including: history tracking and recall and overdue reports

  • Review computer software specific to metrology

  • Develop calibration tasks

  • Close work orders

  • Perform interval and workload analysis

  • Perform interviews as needed

  • Establish and implement statistical process control

  • Challenge and provide input to measurement standards

  • Design calibration lab layouts

  • Manage ASQ CCT and Training Requirements and effectiveness

  • Provide formal training to equipment users and other metrology technicians

  • Research and answer user technical measurement questions

  • Perform data analysis and report on equipment measurement studies

  • Perform system evaluations for calibration

  • Provide process assistance and integration

  • Solve complex calibration/measurement problems

  • Perform technical orientation training for new hires, perform on the job training for new hires

  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School degree required

  • 2 year technical degree required or equivalent military training

  • ASQ CCT Recommended

  • 5 - 10+ year’s experience

  • Previous experience in calibration and test methods on dimensional, electrical and physical equipment

  • Knowledge of Quality Systems, FDA regulations, ISO 13485 and applicable worldwide regulatory requirements

  • Knowledge of math operations, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics and advanced Excel functions

  • Good communication and computer skills, including data analysis and report writing skills

  • Prior medical device experience preferred

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.

  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.

The base pay for this position is $23.25 – $46.55 per hour. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
