Newmont Suriname was established in 2004 as an entity of Newmont Mining Corporation and is headquartered in Paramaribo, Suriname. Located in South America, Suriname was originally settled as a Dutch colony, is very culturally diverse and enjoys a tropical climate. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Strong support from host communities and the government of Suriname strengthen Merian's ability to deliver safe, profitable production with significant upside potential and opportunity for employees, host communities and shareholders.

Purpose

  • Supports a geology (mine, development, or exploration) team by performing basic and entry-level geological research and evaluation assignments; including but not restricted to geologic field or mine data collection, minor calculations and relatively simple tests.

  • Assist in the safe, and exploration… of known and unknown mineral resources

  • Activities are defined with supervisor guidance and significant training before releasing to sole responsibility.

Essential Duties

Health and Safety

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and support of the Safety Journey, Fatal Risk Management, and Vital Behavior programs while working safely on a daily basis.

  • Comply with regulatory health and safety regulations, company policies and procedures.

  • Actively participate in work place inspections to enhance safe practices and minimize or eliminate unsafe practices and equipment and situations through approved Safety practices like Hazard Identiification, SLAM and Planned Task Observation

  • Actively participate in back-to-work and toolbox meetings

    Operational Excellence and Growth

  • Actively familiarizes with Exploration specific SOP’s for the execution of day-to-day tasks

  • Maintains awareness of quality control and quality assurance practices.

  • Assist in preparation of technical reports such as weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual, project completion, QA-QC and environmental regulatory reports.

  • Utilizes basic geologic equipment; compass, mapping and drafting tools, etc. in the perfomance of aappropriate duties

  • Builds a good understnading of local and regional geology, including the identification of lithologies, alterations, mineralogy and structure.

  • Performs basic Microsoft Office software and other office type duties including data entry and database tasks as necessary for data storage and evaluation.

  • Monitors operations of exploration programs and equipment, making decisions in consultation with supervisor about termination of drill holes

  • Actively seeks opportunities to develop technical knowledge

  • Performs field sampling, sample preparation and shipping as instructed.

  • Communicates well, both verbally and in written form, with diverse functional areas (internal and external).

  • Uses established procedures, compiles, correlates basic data, such as drillhole, cross-section preparation and drillhole data entry into computer databases, geologic mapping and logging of core sampling under supervision.

  • Uses established procedures, collects basic geologic data, such as, geochemical samples (rock chip, stream sediment, BLEG, soil, etc.),

  • Assists with field related duties associated with the execution of drilling, trenching, claim staking, geophysical, and geochemical programs.

  • Assists with detailed mineralogical sampling, and studies under supervision, involving a combination of methods such as XRD, MLA, TerraSpec, Core scan, thin and polished sections.

  • Registers, plots, and compiles mineralogical data and assists with reports.

  • Perform geometallurgical sampling under supervision and in close communication with supervisor and the project metallurgical engineer and assists with registering, plotting and compiling of data.

  • Assists with sample packaging and shipments of geometallurgical, and geotechnical samples under supervision and in coordination with the supervisor and metallurgical engineer.

  • Remains abreast of current developments in the geological discipline through industry, government contacts and review of literature and professional organizations.

  • Challenges existing ways of doing business and strives to improve ways of doing business and applies full potential thinking.

Training & Experience

Knowledge:

  • Formal Qualification Stream

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or related field with knowledge of basic geological principles

  • Experience Stream

  • Tertiary online study (accredited) mining-related course - 2 years fulltime-equivalent

  • Natin (Mining Stream)

  • VWO (Physical Sciences Stream)

  • Secondary school diploma

  • Current and valid Surinamese Car driver’s license

  • Light vehicle driver (site certified Pit drivers permit)

  • Defensive driving certification

  • Technical skills learned at the university level are applied in the practical environment and developed through predominantly on-the-job training. Training focus is toward regional, local, or mine geologic settings. Activities are defined with supervisor guidance and significant training before releasing to sole responsibility

  • Previous experience in mining or exploration preferred

  • Competence in basic geologic equipment; compass, mapping and drafting tools, etc.

  • Must be able to hold/operate a phone and radio with sufficient voice and hearing to carry on a conversation.

  • Must be able to drive manual transmission vehicles , 4x4 vehicle .

Experience:

  • Formal Qualification Stream

  • 0-2 years relevant experience in exploration, mining or production geology. Previous experience in mining or exploration preferred.

  • Experience Stream

  • 5-10 years in in exploration and/or open pit mine geology with increasing technical responsibilities

Skills and Abilities:

  • Professionally multi-lingual, with demonstrated ability to read, write and converse in both Dutch and English at a very high standard. Sranan Tongo language skills are desirable.

  • Interpersonal skills to interact with employees at various levels in the organization

  • Strong computer skills including but not limited to MS Office suite

  • Ability to operate standard business software and application specialized software with a high level of skill and accuracy . (ArcGIS, ArcCollector, ArcView, Leapfrog, Vulcan).

  • Strong scheduling and prioritization skillset

  • Competency in working with teams, capacity to identify and solve problems and conflicts.

  • Plans work, dynamic, proactive, organizer, disciplined, responsible, and honest.

Working Conditions

  • Will work at Merian mine and surrounding exploration projects including new mine developments in Suriname

  • May be posted to work in regional and international countries for periods of time depending of levels of activities in those locations or for training and experience purposes.

  • Will work on a rotation basis which may involve extended time periods from home base.

  • Merian is a remote site located in a warm, humid tropical rainforest environment;

  • Accommodation is in a man camp/village environment near the workplace.

  • Must be able to hold/operate a phone and radio with sufficient voice and hearing to carry on a conversation.
