Newmont Suriname was established in 2004 as an entity of Newmont Mining Corporation and is headquartered in Paramaribo, Suriname. Located in South America, Suriname was originally settled as a Dutch colony, is very culturally diverse and enjoys a tropical climate. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Strong support from host communities and the government of Suriname strengthen Merian's ability to deliver safe, profitable production with significant upside potential and opportunity for employees, host communities and shareholders.

Purpose

To aid in building, implementing and overseeing on-site Health and Safety policies, programs and initiatives relating to the Integrated and Health Safety Management system.

Essential Duties

  1. H&S Policy, Procedural and Program Development
  • Facilitate the development and review of Health and Safety policies and procedures, in accordance with site, Newmont and local Surinamese regulations and legislation.

  • Work with Mine Management to design, develop and administer Newmont programs that link to the current Health and Safety strategy to protect employees from work hazards and prevent incidents/accidents.

  • Facilitate and promote the adoption of new Health and Safety training programs and practices.

  • Support implementation of global Newmont and Exploration Health and Safety initiatives.

  1. H&S Operational Execution
  • Facilitate inspections to verify that Health and Safety requirements and governmental legislation is being followed at all times.

  • Facilitate the Health and Safety investigations process, including complaints, serious harm, incidents and accidents.

  • Write detailed reports documenting the findings of the Health and Safety investigations.

  • Facilitate Health and Safety audits, risk assessments, reviews and inspections.

  • Coordinate the integration of Health and Safety activities into exploration efforts.

  • Administer internal Health and Safety consulting services to Newmont line management, when necessary.

  • Act in the capacity of a team leader for task forces and teams, as and when required.

  • Partner with Mine Managers, Process Managers, Project Managers, Contractors, Health and Safety Committee members and Government inspectors to optimize the on-site safety programs and systems at Merian Exploration.

  • Facilitate post-activity reviews to determine if all Marian Exploration employees are adequately trained and coached to perform their roles effectively.

  1. H&S Reporting, Compliance and Continuous Improvement
  • Participate and facilitate in event investigations to discover root causes and identify the appropriate corrective actions to be taken.

  • Identify potentially hazardous situations and report to the Exploration Manager for immediate action and correction.

  • Maintain and report on Health and Safety records and statistics.

  • Monitor lead (preventative) and lag (post-review) Health and Safety indicators.

  • Analyze and evaluate data emerging from leading and lagging indicators.

  • Suggest improvements to correct any deviations from planned leading and lagging indicator targets.

  • Review internal and external Health and Safety reports within the contractor areas that need improvement; and implement measures to minimize the occurrence of unfavorable incidents.

  1. H&S Stakeholder Management, Communication and Capacity Development
  • Assist Exploration management regarding Health and Safety hazard identification exercises, risk management processes, safety rules, regulations and trends.
  1. Staff Supervision

    Manage allocated staff member(s) by:

  • prioritizing and allocating tasks / responsibilities.

  • checking and controlling the quality of work outputs.

  • recommending further / relevant training courses and development actions.

  • enhancing communication with staff through regular feedback, contact, meetings and briefings.

Training & Experience

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Health and Safety, or Engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of experience and education.

Additional Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of relevant local Health and Safety legislative requirements.

  • Sound understanding of Safety Management Systems.

  • Sound knowledge and experience of risk management and loss prevention processes.

  • Additional auditing qualification is desirable.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years’ working experience as a Health and Safety Officer.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong computer literacy skills - MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Working Conditions

  • Incumbent works in an office setting with regular visits to operational areas not all of which have high exposures to hazardous environments.

  • Role is rotational, with rosters and schedules to be determined based on site or project needs.
