This role will be filled as a Senior Counsel or Assistant General Counsel, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This role may be filled in Jackson, MS; Little Rock, AR; The Woodlands, TX; New Orleans, LA; or Washington, D.C. The preferred location is either Jackson, MS or Little Rock, AR

Job Summary/Purpose

Provides first-rate legal advice in strategically important environmental legal areas, based on sound, considered judgment of relevant facts, law, and policies and procedures. Anticipates issues, develops effective ways of resolving them, and to the extent appropriate, provides continued legal counsel through implementation. Proactively and effectively uses contacts and resources as necessary to accomplish goals. Functions effectively within the larger Company, providing direct support to operations leadership and supporting Entergy’s communications, investor relations, external reporting, and similar functions concerning environmental issues and litigation.

Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities

  1. Manage and advise management on legal aspects of the Company's environmental regulatory compliance and responses to any enforcement actions related to the Company's nuclear, fossil, and renewable generating fleet and transmission and distribution operations.

  2. Manage and advise on the Company's litigation involving environmental matters.

  3. Identify and advise on environmental permitting and other environmental risks in the context of operations, commercial transactions and new projects.

  4. Supervise and manage outside counsel and consultants engaged to assist with environmental litigation and regulatory matters.

  5. Advise on environmental legal aspects of the Company's regulatory and other proceedings.

  1. Handle routine tasks without supervision and solving difficult problems with minimal supervision.

  2. Apply legal principles and knowledge to analyzing business conduct and evaluating compliance with regulatory requirements.

  3. Demonstrate in-depth environmental expertise and substantial relevant experience. With only general guidance from supervisors or input from outside counsel, analyze key issues, organize thoughts, advocate and present legal points; draft all documents, negotiate necessary matters, and/or perform other assigned job functions.

  4. Effectively supervise paraprofessionals and administrative staff; demonstrate interest in developing management skills.

  5. Function as a strong team player and demonstrate ability to lead project teams to successful resolution.

  6. Deliver difficult or controversial messages to a wide variety of both supportive and adversarial audiences in a highly-skilled manner.

  7. Practice focused listening and respectful interaction with others.

  8. Keep key organizational functions (e.g., management, communications, external affairs, investor relations) apprised of significant developments in environmental matters.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum education required of the position

A Juris Doctorate is required.

Minimum experience required of the position

Senior Counsel: 6+ years in a law firm or in-house experience practicing environmental law

Assistant General Counsel: 9+ years in a law firm or in-house experience practicing environmental law

Preferred/Desired: Experience with environmental issues for the power generation industry, including environmental laws and regulations pertaining to all environmental media. Combined experience in both government and private practice preferred.

Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position

Highly skilled in complex analysis and in trouble shooting/problem solving issues.

Established track record in handling environmental regulatory and compliance matters.

Solid grasp of rules, guidelines and Company policies governing environmental issues.

Strong, persuasive written and oral communication skills and collaborative skills.

Detailed industry knowledge, including in-depth understanding of the Company’s strategic business values and objectives.
