Job Description

An imperative around driving efficient, reusable, and easy to consume technology solutions is a bedrock of our Company's IT and Digital Strategy. The Enterprise Architecture capability across the company needs to pivot and expand its service offerings and delivery results this year. The CTO Organization’s EA team has been tasked to lead this transformation. The EA team’s mission of “ providing strategic technology decisions linked to investments that achieve business outcomes ” sets the direction and focus for the architecture capability that will underpin the company’s Digital Strategy.

The Executive Director will lead a team of senior Enterprise Systems Architects in the creation of divisional and enterprise business strategies that enable the company’s mission and vision. Through both a direct team of senior systems architects and a federated team of senior technology professionals, this individual will be accountable to ensure our Company has:

  • Documented Divisional Capabilities

  • Documented capability gaps where IT investment needs to occur based on business needs

  • Documented, prioritized business priorities for each division

  • Formal roadmaps connected across domains that direct the IT investment strategy

  • A formal technology governance process to enable the review of modern technologies and their proposed architectures

  • Divisional IT Strategies aligned to measurable business outcomes

Interacting with Senior Divisional IT leaders on a regular basis, this role will need to clearly communicate and demonstrate the value of Enterprise Architecture to their respective organizations. This role needs to ensure the technology strategy that is developed enables the capabilities needed to deliver business value to our customers. Understanding the connection between business requirements and technical requirements across the enterprise will be critical for this role to develop and integrated technology strategy.

As a member of the EA leadership team, this role will ensure the Systems Architecture team is focused on the highest priorities of the enterprise and ensure disconnects are quickly surfaced and addressed by senior IT leaders. This leader will primarily work with business facing IT divisions (Research Labs IT, Manufacturing Division IT, Human Health IT, Animal Health IT) to align systems strategies with business roadmaps, but will also connect with our central IT delivery divisions to ensure a close connection of our technology strategy to our divisional and business strategies.

The Executive Director of Enterprise Systems Architecture will also lead systems architecture for one of the eight IT organizations: Animal Health IT; Chief Technology Office Organization; Human Health IT; Enterprise IT; IT Risk Management & Security; Manufacturing Division IT; Research Laboratories IT; Technology Infrastructure, Operations & Experience. The successful candidate will lead both by setting the direction and strategy for systems architecture within our Company, as well as lead by example through their successful execution of systems architecture for one of these IT organizations.

A partial list of responsibilities includes the following:

  • Establish a seasoned set of Enterprise System Architects (both core team and named set of extended team members).

  • Formalize a technology governance process and publish enterprise systems decisions.

  • Through the team, lead the development of the company’s business capability model and systems application landscape.

  • Stay current with pharmaceutical technology trends and introduce these best practices to the IT organization to meet the changing business landscape.

  • Develop an integrated IT strategy and roadmap that supports the company’s business strategy.

  • Own one divisional Enterprise Systems Architecture domain (mentioned earlier) and for that domain, assemble the strategic priorities, create a clear picture of the capability gaps that may impede enabling these priorities, and produce roadmaps and IT investment needs to address the gaps.

  • Partner with division-aligned business architects, data experts and solutions architects.

  • Drive the notion of reusability.

  • Participates in the development of the architecture departmental strategy.

  • Discover, recommend, and implement enhancements to enterprise business capabilities.

  • Facilitate and drive EA Governance.

  • Demonstrate leadership ability to back decisions with research and the “why,” and articulate options, pros and cons, and a recommendation.

  • Proactively identifies and solves the most complex problems that impact the management and direction of our divisional and business Strategy.

  • Create and collaborate with Divisional partners to create EA deliverables and artifacts.

  • Connect with peer organizations external to the company, as well as key suppliers and industry-leading sources to derive strategic insights and trends while incorporating them into strategies and roadmaps for the company.

  • Leads cross-functional teams projects and initiatives.

  • Builds relationships and fosters teamwork.

  • Drive investment decisions with a mindset to optimize total cost of ownership delivered business value.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, systems analysis, or a related study


  • Well-rounded pharmaceutical background in core aspects of the business (eg, manufacturing, supply chain, marketing and sales, finance, procurement, research and development).

  • Strong leadership and team building skills and must be able to collaborate effectively with a group of high performing individuals.

  • Has expertise in leading-edge practices, techniques, and/or technologies.

  • 15+ years of experience spanning IT disciplines including Systems architecture.

  • 7+ years in a leadership role

  • Experience with the core capabilities, frameworks and technologies necessary to build a strong enterprise architecture practice.

  • Working knowledge of industry frameworks for business domains.

  • Demonstrated ability to partner with business stakeholders and navigate across conflicting priorities to balance critical tactical and strategic needs.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills – able to effectively communicate complex concepts in simple ways to Executive stakeholders.

  • Develops and recommends new concepts, technologies, services, processes or products to address future client and/or customer requirements.

  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.

  • Strategic thinker, with proven ability to work in a broad and top-down manner with a fair amount of ambiguity at the center.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with a variety of audiences and stakeholders including, but not limited to executive management, business leaders, IT peers, and colleagues worldwide.

  • Demonstrated leadership in achieving shared goals in a matrix organization, managing cross-divisional initiatives, and cross-functional teams in an extremely dynamic environment.

  • Develops strategies and goals for and/or leads highly visible or risky projects that have significant company impact.

  • Results-orientation with the proven ability and reputation for developing plans and implementing them successfully.

  • Effectively leverages diversity to enable the benefit of different perspectives.

  • Travel will be required (25%).


  • Prior experience in Enterprise, Technical or Solution Architecture

  • Knowledge/certification in TOGAF or other EA methodology frameworks

  • Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies and processing environments

  • Knowledge of business process re-engineering principles and processes

  • Strong understanding of application development methodologies

  • Experience with internal or external systems development lifecycle (SDLC) practices

  • Master’s or other advanced degree
