Weyerhaeuser Safety Engineer in West Virginia

In this role, you will work collaboratively with our team of talented engineers and mill leadership to improve Weyerhaeuser’s wood product manufacturing and Timberlands operations and provide engineering safety support for various new development efforts.

The Safety Engineer is a corporate level position; meeting needs across the company’s 34 Wood Products manufacturing and Timberlands facilities in the US and Canada. Work location is flexible, open for discussion and will likely be a hybrid model blending in-office, remote, and travel. This role is a fully remote work-from-home position, provided you are currently based (or are planning to move to) one of the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Montana, West Virginia.

This position works closely with the company Safety and Engineering functions and business operations to eliminate Serious Injuries and Fatalities and ensure regulatory compliance. The Safety Engineer will reduce injury risk through engineering design and controls while maximizing human and process performance. This position resides in the Engineering department with a dotted line to corporate Health and Safety.

The safety engineer is responsible to:

  • Contribute to building a safety culture that enables our technical engineering and operational functions to develop safe and compliant processes, systems and solutions to reduce risk and eliminate injuries focusing on engineering controls.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify engineering solutions to eliminate or reduce risk.
  • Apply knowledge of regulatory safety requirements and safety consensus standards in the US and Canada related to machine and equipment safety including fall protection and forestry operations.
  • Collaborate with Wood Products, Timberlands, and Health and Safety in the design of systems and procedures including: a. Engineered fall protection systems b. Machine guarding c. Controlling hazardous energy on machinery, robotics and automated systems d. Reviewing and approving acquisition of, and modifications to equipment e. Support safety-in-design related to production, fire prevention and life safety, combustible dust, electrical safety, ergonomics, forestry, industrial hygiene and environmental initiatives
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a prevention through design (PtD) company standard
  • Work with capital project and engineering managers to provide design review and input on the front end of large projects. Assist with criteria for contractor construction safety requirements and controls.
  • Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified safety and related operational needs including internally designed and fabricated equipment to meet standards, or source third-party resources as needed.
  • Serve as a company fall protection Competent Person
  • Serve as the company automation safety and robotics safety subject matter expert.
  • Coordinate activities and advise the Wood Products Energy Safety Team, the Wood Products Electrical Safety Team and Innovation special projects.
  • Develop next-generation manufacturing concepts and technology roadmap, including new technology benchmarking, evaluation, and deployment to align with company safety strategy & initiatives.
  • Identify, formulate, and solve complex safety-related engineering problems by applying engineering, science, and mathematical principles.
  • Communicate effectively with a range of audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Develop and use collaborative relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals.
  • Organize, manage, and track multiple detailed tasks and assignments with frequently changing priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Develop and implement rigorous quality assurance protocols and testing procedures to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of safety around future automation equipment, conducting risk assessments, failure mode analyses, and validation tests.
  • Demonstrate a high level of understanding and application ability of both basic and advanced safety process control concepts and technologies.
  • Advise operations on consultants for safety engineering projects.
  • Review specifications, technical documentation, and design changes for impacts to safety systems using advanced risk assessment techniques.
  • Develop and implement rigorous quality assurance protocols and validation procedures to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of engineered safety systems by conducting risk assessments, failure mode analyses, and validation tests.

  • Degree in a related engineering discipline (safety engineering, mechanical engineering, or industrial degree preferred) with

  • Professional Engineer status (required) plus Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification (ideal at hire or must strive to obtain within 2 years).
  • Minimum of 5 years’ industrial experience, preferably in manufacturing.
  • Up to 25-30% travel within North America

Our Investment in You: What We Offer

Compensation:This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $114,466 to $171,836 based on your level of skills, qualifications, and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 20% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Retirement:Employees can enroll in our company’s 401k plan, which includes a paid company match in addition to our annual contribution equal to 5% of your base salary.

Paid Time Off or Vacation: We provide eligible employees who are scheduled to work 25 hours or more per week with paid vacation for up to 3 weeks to use during your first year of employment. In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, providing a total of 88 hours along with paid parental leave for all full-time employees.
