Abbott EH&S Lead in Westbrook, Maine

The position of Site Environmental Health and Safety Lead is within our Infectious Disease Developed Markets. In this role you will implement, oversee, and adapt policies and programs to improve the organization's environmental and safety performance, ensure it complies with current and future local, state and federal regulations and standards, and protect its reputation.


  • Acts as technical resource for project teams, management and other iinternal customers.

  • Ensures OSHA, EPA, DEP, DOT and other applicable regulations are satisfied.

  • Maintains environmental, safety and health information to meet government requirements, as well as to provide data for problem solving and decision making.

  • Controls hazards such as noise, chemical exposures, radiation, or biological hazards that can create harm. Partners with other areas (ie. engineering) to ensure controls are in place.

  • Identifies future development needs- Prepares a plan that sets appropriate development goals, establishes timelines, identifies resource requirements (time, money, support from others) and applies newly acquired knowledge, skill and/or experience to the position.

  • Improves the workplace/workspace design and layout based on an understanding of human physiological and psychological characteristics, abilities and limitations.

  • Determines the root cause and facts related to an accident or incident based on witness interview, site inspections and collection of other evidence. Takes appropriate action in a timely fashion to address data. Develops action plans from data and ensures their implementation.

  • Plans, organizes and tracks the implementation of activities to achieve safety objectives in the organization, and implements administrative or technical controls that will eliminate or reduce hazards.

  • Helps managers establish safety objectives, plan programs to achieve those objectives and integrate safety into the culture of the organization based on the Corporate EHS program.

  • Recognizes and communicates environmental, health and safety risks, and takes appropriate action within established limits.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience administering a safety program.

  • Project management experience

  • Working knowledge of governmental regulations and applicable standards such as EPA, OSHA, DOT and ISO.

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience in technical writing and/or writing SOPs

  • Adapts information to customer needs, adjusts communication style and medium (verbal, written or electronic) to meet the needs of the receiver (peers, managers, customers), delivers only relevant information, uses appropriate level of language and detail for the receiver.
