Our location in Westford, MA, currently has an opportunity for a Staff Patent Engineer.
THIS POSITION CAN ALSO BE BASED OUT OF OUR SANTA CLARA, CA SITE.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Use multidisciplinary engineering knowledge and in-depth patent administration knowledge to support innovation and defendable claims development in pursuit of the company's strategic plan.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING
Participate in various project teams during prototype design, technical data reviews, product history and competitive market assessment. Seeks out new inventions that are patentable.
Interview engineers and technical staff and observe early-stage innovation reviews to identify innovation. Interpret and document the scope of the invention.
Assist inventors in completing and submitting invention disclosures, patent applications, and related paperwork. Create all relevant materials for disclosure and application, write, develop drawings, and double-check for accuracy.
Perform, collect and organize initial prior art landscape searches.Work with commercial marketing team to gather competitor product intelligence.
Collaborate with our Patent Attorneys to review and prioritize submissions based on company portfolio and innovation strategy.Follow up with contributors to revise submissions, manage forms and applications through to application completion.
Project manage the submission process from inception to final acceptance by Legal.
Leverage your in-depth technology expertise (at least one of the following):Mechanical design of biocompatible metals and plastics, Electrical engineering, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.
Support all Divisional initiatives as identified by divisional management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
Perform other related duties as directed.
An excellent opportunity for a candidate to gain significant practical experience to diversify into intellectual property and possibly become a patent agent or patent attorney.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Bachelors Degree - Engineering, Computer Science, or related preferred or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Masters Degree preferred
Minimum of 5 years total R&D experience, principally in either engineering or computer science/artificial intelligence.
In-depth experience working with innovation documentation (e.g., invention disclosure forms).
Experience designing and testing medical devices or medical software required.
Experience developing drawings for new devices or software, either by hand or digitally. CAD Experience in ProE and/or Solidworks a plus. Non-confidential portfolio examples encouraged.
Ability to grasp new technical teachings quickly. Ability to efficiently review patent and non-patent literature for key concepts.
Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects. Project leadership and management skills required.
Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
Open to or experienced in the latest design tools and techniques (e.g., Design for Manufacturability, Analytical Design, Design for Usability)
Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in timely manner with strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.
Ability to travel, including internationally.
Sense of humor strongly preferred.
