What Employee Relations & Labor Relations contributes to Cardinal Health
Human Resources designs, implements and delivers human resource programs and policies, including recruitment, talent management, diversity and inclusion, compensation and benefits, among others. This function anticipates and plans for long-term human resource needs in alignment with business strategies.
Employee Relations provides impartial advice and counsel to managers and employees on a wide variety of employee relations and management issues. This job family is responsible for conducting investigations, preparing responses to federal, state and local governmental agencies and conducing organizational health engagements focusing on positive employee relations. Labor Relations is responsible for ensuring the health of existing collective bargaining agreements, educating management on union awareness and addressing third party attempts to organize our workforce.
Responsibilities
Employee and Labor Relations
Manages employee and labor relations matters for unionized and non-union workforce.
Conducts investigations as needed for cases involving unionized workforce and makes recommendations as needed. This includes complaints or grievances filed by the Union.
Mediate discussions between employer and employee representatives in attempt to reconcile differences.
Schedule or coordinate the details of grievance hearings or other meetings.
Works with ER/LR Leadership, Site leadership, Security, and others on escalated issues and other matters as required.
Interprets contractual agreements for leaders and employees engaged in labor relations processes.
Review and approve employee disciplinary actions, such as written warnings, suspensions, and terminations.
Train managers or supervisors on topics related to labor relations, such as working conditions, safety, or equal opportunity practices.
Identifies Employee Relations/Labor Relations trends and communicates to Site and Advice and Council Center leadership as needed.
Proactively develops and maintains technical knowledge in employment law and HR/ER, remaining up-to-date on current trends and best practices.
Jointly develops practical implementation plans to resolve ER issues that consider the overall culture of the organization with a goal to maintain a positive, engaged work environment.
Leave of Absences
Administer and facilitate all leave of absence claim processes, including Workers Comp, FMLA, ADA, and other statutory or company-specific leaves for unionized workforce. Will work closely with service providers and facilitate transitional return to work, ensuring that employees receive the necessary support during their leave periods.
Administer and facilitate unionized workforce leave and disability programs, including tracking open requests and return of certifications by assigned deadlines
Use independent judgment to issue determinations on continuous and intermittent leave requests.
Communicate and educate policies and procedures related to the leave and disability process with employees and managers.
Support leaders in the interactive process with employees to identify reasonable accommodations under the ADA.
Administer the leave/accommodation tracking system and develop workflows. Identify ways to automate processes and streamline procedures for leave management.
Educate staff on policy changes and best practices regarding leaves.
Reconcile disability, paid leave, PTO, and unpaid time for leave-related absences.
Manage the leave inbox, ensuring timely responses to inquiries.
Other
Manage all HR administrative tasks for the union workforce, including HR information systems maintenance, mail handling, file maintenance, document management, and site HR compliance management.
Work with corporate payroll to resolve employee payroll issues.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s in related field, or equivalent work experience, preferred
4+ years of experience in related field, preferred, specifically in Employee Relations or HR Generalist roles with a focus in Employee Relations in a Union environment
2+ years working complex Employee Relations issues, FMLA, ADA, Title VII, and other state and federal regulations preferred
Experience handling workplace investigations and/or EEOC charges strongly preferred
Bilingual in English and Spanish highly preferred. Haitian creole is a plus.
1+ years of HRIS ADP experience is a plus.
Strong coaching and problem-solving skills
Ability to work on-site 5 days a week required, with flexibility to support day and night shift as needed.
