The Tedlar® Technology group in DuPont is dedicated to providing customers with long-lasting, durable surface protection with our portfolio of polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) products, servicing the photovoltaic, transportation, building and construction, and other broad industrial markets. The group is seeking an application development engineer or scientist to enhance the growth of the business through customer-oriented applications innovation.

The Application Development Engineer position is focused on developing the technology foundations for new growth in a variety of end markets for Tedlar® products. This position will lead technical research programs and customer collaborations that investigate feasibility, define the value proposition, understand the competitive landscape, and develop the technology necessary to successfully compete in new markets for polyvinyl fluoride products. The technical research programs span from new idea generation all the way to commercialization and global deployment of the new technology. This position will report to the Tedlar® Global Technology Manager and will work closely with the commercial team, including sales and marketing managers, and the global technology organization. The position will be located at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware.

The successful candidate should be able to quickly learn about new technologies and markets, summarize and teach learnings, and contribute to developing new applications that enable commercial success with Tedlar® products. The successful candidate will need exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, a creative and entrepreneurial mindset, and a strong desire to succeed.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to develop and communicate technical knowledge that enables successful use of Tedlar® technologies for new markets and customers, resulting in revenue growth of the business. This requires a high level of analysis and judgement, diverse technical knowledge, ability to learn rapidly from a variety of sources, and strong oral and written communication skills.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • In close collaboration with sales and marketing, identify new opportunities for product applications. Understand the technical needs of the market and determine how Tedlar® products might meet those needs, in comparison with other competitive options.

  • Develop fundamental understanding of customer needs, industry processes, relevant standards, and required and desired product performance characteristics. Understand competitive landscape and how materials are differentiated.

  • Create prototypes of applications that use Tedlar® polyvinyl fluoride films and coatings on a variety of polymer and metal substrates. Determine and employ appropriate process technology for applying films and coatings on substrates, such as nip roll lamination, vacuum lamination, press lamination, thermoforming, metal forming, and other standard unit operations. Coordinate with outside contract manufacturing as needed.

  • Conduct performance or material property testing of films, laminates, and prototype parts internally or through collaboration with customers or external partners and laboratories.

  • Research fundamental properties of polyvinyl fluoride films, coatings, and relevant adhesives to support growing the existing technical body of knowledge around applications of PVF films.

  • Clearly communicate results to internal stakeholders and customers in both oral and written format. Distill complex technical information into generally understandable communications. Write technical literature and give engaging presentations to explain product attributes and processing to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Become a technical expert in polyvinyl fluoride technology and develop into a go-to resource for technical knowledge. Be able to quickly search technical information and synthesize and retain knowledge.

  • Engage in face-to-face customer interactions to support customers in their product/application development efforts.

  • Travel approximately 5% of the time within North America.

Your Qualification Profile:

  • Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Science, Material Science, Chemistry, or related field.

  • 3+ years of experience is preferred

  • Rapidly learns about new areas and analyze information from diverse sources, including literature, patents, and customer interactions, to provide guidance and direction to technical programs.

  • Works effectively in the laboratory, creating prototypes and performing property testing. Ability to give direction to associate investigators to accelerate research.

  • Fast moving and self-motivated. Makes progress to test critical assumptions and lower uncertainty. Able to create and execute learning plans and manage a stage-gate development process on a timeline.

  • Able to work well with others, including those in different technical disciplines and with other business functions. Able to communicate complex concepts in simple language.

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, both internally and with customers. Ability to distill complex technical information into understandable content for a variety of audiences. Has a professional manner. Fluent in English.

  • Experience with lamination and adhesives is desired.

  • Experience with polymer films and/or coatings is desired
